Your father didn't have any choice in the matter but to take orders, whether he wanted to take orders or not. Taking orders therefore, was not your father's choice as you've otherwise eluded to.

The reason your father was assigned to the front lines in Italy was because he was drafted into WWII, which means your father was not a willing volunteer who was willing to serve his country. That means your father did not show up at the Recruitment office on his own and volunteer his service to serve his country. The US government had to force his hand by drafting him, which means forcing him to show up and be ready to take orders.

Your father was drafted into the Infantry as were 61% of all US Servicemen during WWII, which means 61% of the US soldiers in the US military did not volunteer to serve their country, which actually means they were forced against their will to serve their country which is what "draft" means.

The other reason your father was assigned to the front lines as an Infantryman was again because he was drafted, which means draftees did not have a choice of assignment for more elite military postings, unlike 'volunteers who voluntarily Enlisted' who got to choose which branch of the US military they would serve in, such as the Air Force for example.

I should also point out that during WWII, the Air Force was not comprised of draftees to fly airplanes! The Air Force was comprised of voluntary Enlistees who wanted to be there, unlike draftees who didn't give a shitte and were forced against their will to be there, which is why all draftees ended up in the Infantry Division and usually as front line soldiers. There were many Enlisted Infantrymen who ended up on the front line as well, but draftees didn't have a choice in the matter of where they ended up.

So when you say shitte like "A Marine that could not take orders? So not a real Marine?", keep in mind that your own father was not a real soldier either when you stoop to those terms, because your father was drafted and not a voluntary Enlistee and don't you ever forget that.
