During the 1992 presidential race, Ross Perot had an opinion on NAFTA. Was he right?

When I was first starting out, I liked to go eat lunch at a BBQ place not far from my office. I saw him in there eating lunch and thought what a small world. Then another time it was really busy and I was sitting at a table eating my BBQ and reading a file when he excused himself and asked if he could sit with me because all the seats were filled. I of course said yes and moved my purse. He introduced himself, and I told him I knew who he was; we then had a nice conversation. He never went anywhere without security. He was a very nice man.

@carpediem He was like Trump, a shrewd, worldly businessman.
Kstrong · 56-60, F
@TexChik i think the county could have beneftited under his leadership
TexChik · F
@Kstrong especially now knowing the Bush boys were rinos!

Ross Perot did not win in '92 but his economic plans and his 30 minute speeches to the American people did resonate with a good amount of American and independent thinking voters. George Bush would have easily won that election with an 89% approval following the Gulf War but he was done in by the '92 recession and the fact that he broke his "No new taxes" pledge.

@Barefooter25 I think his high water mark was 19% in Kansas. I think Bush had squandered the end the cold war and blew a super chance to move the entire world to a new era that wasn't based on east-west distrust, than his reasoning for invading Panama sounded too contrived to justify invading a heavily populated city.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
@Heartlander Since he was already in Panama with all those forces, he had a great opportunity to snatch the Panama Canal while arresting Noriega. Another squandered opportunity.
I voted for Perot. During the debates, both Clinton and Bush, when answering questions, kept saying over and over ... "I agree with Ross...". 🤔
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Yep. As I remember, he referred to it as as a swishing sound as the great US wealth gets siphoned off. And predicted a future US economy where we do one another's laundry.

A drive by most strip malls 25+ years later and what we typically see is a massage parlor, a hair dresser, a tanning salon, coffee shop and a few closed store fronts.

I didn't like the little man but he did make a few good points.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
@carpediem He did resonate with independent thinking voters but George Bush breaking his "No new taxes" pledge and beginning to campaign in the last minute was enough to give Clinton the '92 election.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@DavidT8899 That entire election cycle gave voters no good choices. Bush was out of touch, the Clintons were crooks and Perot was out in right field talking to himself.

Lee Atwater put Bush in the White House for one term, he could have put anyone in the White House, but Bush was on his own for a 2nd try, and he had wasted Atwater's achievement by trying too hard to accommodate Democrats.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
@Heartlander That and openly supported the New World Order with a one world government. That should have been a reg flag and a warning of how politically toxic that whole family is.
He split enough of the Republican vote to get Clinton elected. I was angry at the time because I hadn't learned that Bush (and most of the GOP) was really just a NWO globalist.

@BizSuitStacy Absolutely correct
@4meAndyou 😳🤯
I still love you 😉
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@BizSuitStacy was it Perot or was it Bush’s cave on taxes after having run on a “read my lips” slogan? My own thinking was and is tha it was more Bush that accounted for the Clinton win. Perot lost it all with his pick of a VP candidate and became a non issue.
carpediem · 61-69, M
Three people voted no in this poll. I'd love to hear an argument why they believe he was wrong.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Yes, he was. We should have elected him President.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@carpediem I did not, and I regret it.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@SumKindaMunster I did. I often wondered if I wasted my vote.
PatKirby · M
@carpediem

I did vote for him.
Ferric67 · M
This actually came up in conversion with one of my appointments earlier today
MarineBob · 56-60, M
I was one of his largest contributors.... and he only got a dollar
4meAndyou · F
I voted for him, so I thought so at the time...☺☺☺

Reminds me of the Ross Parrot skit on Sesame Street from way back when...
