I Am Concerned About the Economy

Somebody please explain to me why we're destroying our economy, why we are sheltering in place? According to the CDC 30 -40 MILLION cases of the flu have been reported this year. 400k - 500k have been hospitalized. Approximately 50,000 have died. What in the heck is the difference?
I can't believe your asking this question! Do you not understand the severity of the situation? Economy can return! A lost life can't!

10 million people have filed for unemployment in 3 weeks. A staggering record.@RadiantRuby
@Vacantfever41 what country are you from?

6 weeks of news articles and you still don't know?

How many healthcare providers have died from the flu in that time?

Worst thing is many aren't even doing as they are told. They are out and about as if this is a vacation and are not distancing when in public.

Maybe if everyone had just listened in the first place and chosen to think of others instead of themselves, and social distanced from the start we would already be in recovery mode. And our economy would probably not be suffering as much. But the incredible selfishness, lack of caring about others, believing this was a hoax or a political play by either side, led people to go about their "business as usual lifestyles"... The virus doesn't care if your Democrat or Republican and we should stop politicizing this. Americans need to start working together instead of using this as just another tool to separate us. I have many friends in the medical field and this is not just another "flu". The repercussions of this virus could indeed severely affect our health care system. But yet even at this point, if people would just stop arguing and stay in their homes for a week or two we could make a huge difference.... And yet people won't.@curiosi
As Rahm Emmanuel said...never let a crisis go to waste. And there are those out there who are trying to seize this opportunity for their own agenda.

It's a balancing act. We need to slow the spread of the disease to prevent an overload to our healthcare system. However, if the economic shutdown lengthy, and the supply chain disruption cannot rebound quickly...the consequences of that could make the pandemic seem like a picnic. Get ready for something a bit like The Walking Dead.

We all know there is something else at play here...... just not sure what it is yet.

What in the heck is the difference? A higher rate of transmissivity and infection, and a much higher death rate. If you look at the number of US cases and deaths, the death rate is running about 2.8%, compared to 0.1% for the flu. I suppose you'd have no problem risking yourself having roughly a one in 30 chance of dying from contracting a virus you have no immunity to, and that is easily spread.

Honestly I’m trying to figure out why we get unemployment, severance pay for a job we are going back to, a stimulus check and $600 a week while on unemployment additionally. I must be missing something. So we are being overpaid to stay home the way I understand it.

I agree with you
We are destroying the economy because NYC has built an easily exploitable urban environment ....

The Gov is using this as a way to weed out the weakest businesses..
preaching to the choir
