Lets not forget he killed a US military serviceman. He bragged about doing so.

@HoraceGreenley And that attitude is why the US is the biggest Danger to the world. Congratulations you have turned into your parents. The new British Empire.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
As for keeping the Western World safe, on behalf of the US, I say, "You're Welcome."
I don't want your gratitude or money. Your silence will be sufficient.
You can continue to discuss nonsense with the other Lotus Eaters:
It refers to self absorbed, pseudo-intellectual dope smokers who are prone to grandiose ideas, but insulated from the real-world consequences. Lotus Eaters think that their skewed subjective reality is analogous to all other peoples in all other circumstances - even disparate cultures on the other side of the world.
You are safe in the knowledge that I, and my countrymen, will protect you.

@HoraceGreenley Shall we name the massive lists of wars that would never have happened since 1945 without you guys starting it?

@LesDeplorable There you go calling yourself a free thinker and anti government and you accept without question their claim he is a terrorist despite literally no evidence of that. About the worst that can be proven is he was raised by nutjobs.

I'm with you on this. A foreign government imprisoned and tortured a Canadian teenager without due process or a lawyer, and our government was an active participant. Our PM then directly interfered in any attempt to get him a fair trial and into a Canadian jail.
If that happened to me you're damn right I'd be suing for millions.

@HoraceGreenley And that self righteous arrogance is what makes you guys a liability to world peace.

@HoraceGreenley I see a very well indoctrinated drone.

I wonder what some Canadians wrongly accused and served 20 years in jail before being proven wrong were compensated for...
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@SatanBurger
Yes, high profile cases get more attention. When a blond little girl gets kidnapped it makes the news. When a celebrity does something bad it gets more attention.
That's bad.
What does it have to do with anything?

PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@SatanBurger Actually no. His imprisonment and turning him into a scapegoat to justify getting involved in a war we had no business in was a political stunt. And actually you are wrong on the second point. A man convicted of murder and later released was paid out a similar sum. The fact that half will go to his legal team is just details to you I guess. And how much would you want after being locked in a medieval dungeon and tortured for a decade? I guess you think it is okay for the government to break literally every right of a citizen and violate a few hundred years of legal precedent if you don't like the person. And I am not kidding in the sense that Harper brought Canada back to before the age of Elizabeth the first in terms of law on this.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@SatanBurger It is also problematic in the sense that the US and Canada created a new precedent of acceptable brutality. Now our soldiers or even regular Joe citizen can expect similar treatment in other nations that do not like our government. People forget that Hosni Mubarack used the brutal crackdown on OWS as an example of how his crackdown protests in Cairo was in line with western norms and after what was done in NYC he was not wrong.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
The Canadian government definitely broke the law and got caught, the court made the right decision and anyone complaining are either religious bigots or racist
Firespirit · 26-30, M
@MetalGreymon You said "citizens of canada have the right to a fair trial for any crimes of which they are accused"
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@Firespirit
Yes they do. But what does that fact that other people have also been let down by the justice system have to do with whether it is right or wrong that khadr won his suit?

@lorne13 the bastard was captured on the battlefield as an illegal combatant. He's not a soldier.
He has no rights

He was and is a Canadian citizen; the Canadian government handed him over to be tortured. If they did that to me or someone I knew I would damn well want major compensation.

@LesDeplorable That and by using their logic every child gang member should get 10 million. It sucks but that's what gangs do.. same as extremists. People have children just specifically to join the gang.. especially if they are boys. That's why some gangs motto are all about never die and they brag about it... because in fact they never truly die with brainwashing little kids.
That's why they call it the cycle of violence.
While this presents another problem.. I don't think trying to break that cycle by awarding 10 million is going to do much.

he did injure a dude and should pay for that Now american system is rather fucked but these are the people who want us dead so its iffy. He is a victim of circumstance with his father being linked to many terrorist groups but that does not excuse his crime.
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@Firespirit
And how do you know khadr was a terrorist?
No evidence to that effect was presented during his trial.
All we know for sure is that he was a 15 year old accused of killing a soldier during a firefight.
Are you assuming his guilt in the absence of evidence? Is he guilty until proven innocent?
Pardon me, but i didn't think that was how our justice system worked.

He has no Human Rights. Once he is captured as an illegal combatant he forfeits his human rights. Therefore any ruling by a Canadian court regarding his incarnation in Gitmo is frivolous.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@HoraceGreenley So I guess you feel you can violate any law when you decide you don't like it. Your nation ratified the UN convention.
Actually they are following the law and not making it up as they go.

HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Not at all. I, as is my country, following "the law"
The US did not ratify all of the amendments to the Geneva Convention.
According to US law, and the amendments we ratifies, the US did not break any laws.

@HoraceGreenley No. You are following the ones you feel like and cherry picking the rest.
The US was the party that held the Nuremberg trials and so tell me how do you get around those legal precedents?

The soldier Omar had killed rescued two children.. he didn't deserve to die and Omar had every choice not to do it. Also clearly people like Omar and the rest of his terrorist buddies don't really give a shit about the country they are fighting for when they also attack Muslim citizens.
Muslims have been celebrating Mosul lately and they been holding festivals because ALL of that is banned under the group Omar was fighting FOR. I don't believe that's a person I can stand behind.

Soldiers kill other men in war. Those men might have saved lives, loved their wives and cherished their children. War is shit.
It's also beside the point.
Even aside from the fact that there was no evidence presented that proved khadr was actually guilty of the "crime" of which he was accused, the reason he won the 10 million was because the canadian (and american government) was complicit in the subversion of his rights.
That's how the justice system works, satanburger. We don't pick and choose who gets to benefit from it.
Or are you comfortable presuming guilt until proven innocent? Are you in favour of stripping human rights as long as you consider the target a bad guy?
Tell me, in what way does that differ from the terrorists who want to take your rights and freedoms?

@CaptainCanadia I'm not sure why you assume he was a citizen. In my opinion he revoked his right to citizenship. He clearly had the same values as the group he was joining because he was fighting FOR a group that is not only against a certain sect of Islam but also against democracy.. from their own words themselves. Like they've stated a clear agenda not once but several times.
I never said he was the "worst guy ever" but I just don't think that when a 15 year old up and joins a terrorist organization he just somehow is so young and brainless that he "didn't know what he was doing."

You have got to stop misrepresenting the situation.
He was taken overseas at nine years old. He was a child soldier. It's more than a little indigenous to characterize that as "up and joining a terrorist organization".
Do you know what a child soldier is? Are you under the impression that they are usually well informed and knowing participants in war?
So what you've said is that based on your misrepresentation of events and assumptions that you have made with no foundation, he doesn't deserve his rights.

Unless you can define an illegal combatant you won't understand the legal ramifications. None of you have demonstrated an understanding of what it is.
