Omar Khadr has just recieved his 10 million dollars that he won in the suit against the canadian government. How do you feel about that?

I don't think they were wrong to give it to him.
He was detained as a minor, held without trial and tortured for a decade.
The canadian and american government violated his human rights.

Frankly all these people saying he's a traitor and didn't deserve a trial or deserved to die are acting in exactly the manner they hate the terrorists for acting.

I'm with you on this. A foreign government imprisoned and tortured a Canadian teenager without due process or a lawyer, and our government was an active participant. Our PM then directly interfered in any attempt to get him a fair trial and into a Canadian jail.

If that happened to me you're damn right I'd be suing for millions.

@CaptainCanadia

Absolutely. It was criminal. And that's why khadr won the suit
@CaptainCanadia Frankly I think Harper should be behind bars for this.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@CaptainCanadia He was classified by the American government as an illegal combatant.

That's a fact.

Irrespective of how you interpret the Geneva convention, Canadian law is what matters here. He did not void his citizenship and had no ability to do so. More importantly, he was 15. He did not have the maturity to understand the situation he was in, legally. We do not let 15-year-olds enlist, vote, have sex with adults, drink, or drive alone. He was placed in that situation by his parents.

And we don't send them to Guantanamo, he is the only child soldier to be tried by military commission in 70 years. We don't do it for a reason.

You're working very hard to say that the freedoms soldiers fight and die for shouldn't be there. If you don't like right to a fair trial, the right to be free of torture, and the right for children to fuck up and get a second chance I'm sure North Korea would love to have you. Canada is better than that. "Freedoms for me an nobody else" is not how this works.

@CaptainCanadia he was classified as an illegal combatant by the US government. That's all I care about.

That's not an opinion but a fact.

The rest of this is mental masterbation.
CaptainCanadia · 41-45, M
@HoraceGreenley He's a Canadian citizen. The US government can do what they wants, but the Canadian government has a duty to extradite him to get fair trial, which they failed at. Hence the payout. Just because your government tortures children doesn't mean it's something everyone should be doing.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@CaptainCanadia As an American, Canada can do whatever it wants. Again, everyone may act however they wish, they just need to accept the consequences. If someone thinks they can dress as a civilian and kill soldiers without consequence, they are mistaken. If a child thinks they can kill soldiers without consequence, they are mistaken.

if Canada wants to pay this guy something, then they are free to do so. I think Canada is nuts for doing so, but it's Canadian taxpayer money and not mine, so go ahead.

As for the "torture" issue, I would say:

1. Children can and have killed soldiers.
2. Children have been killed in combat after having killed soldiers and while they are attempting to kill soldiers.

I don't give a rat's ass about children, who have killed or have attempted to kill, American soldiers. Their age affords them no protection. If they are killed or captured I have no sympathy for them.

Also, i don't consider the treatment they received torture.
@HoraceGreenley If you feel that way you have basically sold out every value your nation has been founded on. Including innocence until proven guilty. You believe he killed someone because your government said so. There has never been any actual proof. Literally all evidence from the actual incident proves it is bullshit.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Actually no. You can't treat combatants as criminals.

I realistically believe that there are people willing to hid among the civilian population to wage war. They use civilians as shields, and put them in danger of being killed.

My sympathy is for the soldiers and the civilians not the evil bastards trying to kill soldiers and noncombatants.
@HoraceGreenley

You treat citizens as citizens and not just when it is easy or convenient.

As near as I can tell you just sell out your principles whenever it gets tough to stick to them,
@HoraceGreenley And I guess you are willing to string someone up without any evidence at all.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow In combat, when someone shoots at me i shoot back.
@HoraceGreenley Except there is zero evidence he even did that. Even the official after action report contradicts that.

The after action report indicates that the person who threw the grenade was a middle aged man. Kadr looks 12 now.

He was shot in the back twice. Tell me. How does someone facing you throwing a grenade at you take two rounds through the back? The US has cool toys but I am not aware of bullets that stop in midair and change direction.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow

1. Throw grenade
2. Run away
@HoraceGreenley Can he magically alter his age too?
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@HoraceGreenley Exactly. You don't give a shit about facts, evidence or the law. You are happy to make an example of him like your government.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I care deeply...about the victims and potential victims.

As for unlawful combatants, I don;t give a shit.

Now the adults are busy. Go back to the kiddie table.
@HoraceGreenley You just don't give a shit who you use as a scapegoat or an example. Might as well yank a kid off the street.

Seems you don't give a shit about the people who founded your country. General Washington would be rolling in his grave.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow
You obviously don't know much about history.

As for keeping the Western World safe, on behalf of the US, I say, "You're Welcome."

I don't want your gratitude or money. Your silence will be sufficient.

You can continue to discuss nonsense with the other Lotus Eaters:

It refers to self absorbed, pseudo-intellectual dope smokers who are prone to grandiose ideas, but insulated from the real-world consequences. Lotus Eaters think that their skewed subjective reality is analogous to all other peoples in all other circumstances - even disparate cultures on the other side of the world.

You are safe in the knowledge that I, and my countrymen, will protect you.
@HoraceGreenley I know my history very well. I am guessing you do not.

Since 1945 you have been nothing but a liability to this nation.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Dude, the US is your biggest trading partner.

@HoraceGreenley That is nice. You still manage to get more of us killed then any other nation.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M

@HoraceGreenley And that self righteous arrogance is what makes you guys a liability to world peace.
