Omar Khadr has just recieved his 10 million dollars that he won in the suit against the canadian government. How do you feel about that?

I don't think they were wrong to give it to him.
He was detained as a minor, held without trial and tortured for a decade.
The canadian and american government violated his human rights.

Frankly all these people saying he's a traitor and didn't deserve a trial or deserved to die are acting in exactly the manner they hate the terrorists for acting.

He has no Human Rights. Once he is captured as an illegal combatant he forfeits his human rights. Therefore any ruling by a Canadian court regarding his incarnation in Gitmo is frivolous.

@HoraceGreenley Furthermore being an illegal combatant has no age of majority. His age is irrelevant.

He was classified as an illegal combatant by the US. Once that occurs he has no Human Rights
CaptainCanadia · 41-45, M
That's not how laws work.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@CaptainCanadia Actually that is exactly how it works. You need to understand what an illegal combatant is and the consequences.

A good place to start is the Geneva Convention

Look man, the Canadian Supreme court very clearly ruled on this. How Americans treat enemy combatants (again, a child) does not matter. He's a Canadian citizen and subject to Canadian law, and the Supreme Court stated very, very clearly he has a right to a fair trial he did not receive.

The United Nations ruled very clearly he was a child soldier whose rights were violated. He is the only child soldier in modern history who has been detained and tortured in such a fashion. You can believe torturing children is morally right, and that makes you a monster, but it doesn't change the law.

Every legal ruling on this of any kind has stated he was a Canadian citizen, a minor who was denied his human rights.

You can't just assert you know better because you have google and some right wing websites. Unless you're a lawyer who specializes in this shit, you're just wrong. The Canadian gov't doesn't pay out 10 million dollars unless they have no choice, and they have very good lawyers.

The Canadian government fucked up, and there's a price to pay.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@CaptainCanadia as an American I don't care what Canadian courts or government says. We classified him as an illegal combatant. We treated him accordingly.

The fact remains the American government classified him this way. That's not my opinion.

If Canada doesn't like it that's their problem.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@CaptainCanadia I also don't give two shits about the United Nations.

Both Canada and the UN are making political statements.

We should have killed the bastard on the battlefield and saved everyone a lot of trouble.
@HoraceGreenley So I guess you feel you can violate any law when you decide you don't like it. Your nation ratified the UN convention.

Actually they are following the law and not making it up as they go.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Not at all. I, as is my country, following "the law"

The US did not ratify all of the amendments to the Geneva Convention.

According to US law, and the amendments we ratifies, the US did not break any laws.
@HoraceGreenley No. You are following the ones you feel like and cherry picking the rest.

The US was the party that held the Nuremberg trials and so tell me how do you get around those legal precedents?
