I've asked for years, what exactly do you suggest?
I have heard all kinds of horrible idea's like limiting number of guns, requiring licensing fees, registrations, insurance. All things that would infringe upon a right.
No one would support requiring fee's to register to vote or insurance to ensure your vote is accurate and not fraud so no reason they should be for guns either.
Background check fees are much like a poll tax too and should be removed and not added as a type of sales tax to fund it either. IN fact guns should not have sales tax of any type on them ever as sales tax on a right is wrong and infringes up on a right.
I'm completely open to free background checks or better yet, the same requirements to register to vote to be used to buy a gun. We keep hearing about how secure and accurate ballot registrations are so the same database can be used for both rights. That would be a good place to start.
Although personally I don't think guns is the problem I think its social media and a disconnect from society and not seeing others as people but instead targets and the enemy for those who live their life often online and do not get out and deal with people in person and if they do they stay with those in a echo chamber so the other side takes on an enemy appearance more and more and less human to them.
Add to the mix the fear that the other side is trying to harm or take something away from them, real or not will help to create a justified reason for it.
A good example is the CEO of United Health care where many liberals saw it as justified for a greedy corporation, very sad that so many saw it that way.
Mental health issues too, even with health insurance isn't very affordable. We complain about costs at hospitals and such as being too high but how is it with even great health insurance a co-pay to visit a therapist for a rape victim for example is a $100 a session, every single time? The insurance pays a great deal more on top of that, why isn't there outrage that those doctors are changing soo much just to do therapy?? (personal experience on this one.)
I don't see any way to disarm America and I'm not about to give up my guns because police are more than two hours away when I call them in rural America. I won't be left sitting around waiting to be raped and/or killed while I wait for them.
It is our own job to defend and protect ourselves as the courts have ruled decades ago that police have no legal requirement to protect anyone, anyone can look up those SCOTUS cases if they want.
The only way anyone is taking them is from my dead hands and there is millions of American's who believe the exact same as I do.
Several liberals have said that is just fine in their eyes to execute tens of millions of American's who won't give up their guns and they say it casually with no regard for life as they have no value to life to what they see as the enemy.
When I've had peaceful discussions in the past with Democrats on this, some have flat out told me to my face that I should ask the person with a gun trying to break in if they can please wait until the police arrive then we'll discuss letting them in or that it is my duty to die or be raped or attacked to ensure others do not die by guns, that it is for the general good of the public.
I know that is not an official platform just some crazy liberals I've talked to in person that do not speak for the rest of them.
There is crazy people out there on all sides and we must not cast a wide net, which is easy to do and throw everyone who identifies that way into the same catch. As it would be easy for me to say all Democrats and liberals think like these people I've talked to in person do as well.
I think the problem isn't the tool, its something is broken in society. You remove one tool and next thing we know there is going to be lot of people driving trucks through huge crowds instead, like Nice France (look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about.)
Lets work on fixing society and why people think its a good idea to go shoot others in the first place and address that.
We live in a world where people can 3d print guns, where they can make their own ammo and a good gunsmith can make their own guns too.
I'm all ears to reasonable idea's.
Some good ones I've heard though is teach about guns in public schools, teach gun safety and how to clean them. While doing all this can also focus on the value of life, how all life has value and that it is morally wrong to want to harm someone else.

In September 2023 President Biden gave a an important powerful speech on gun violence in America. He passionately urged Congress to act on sane gun safety legislation. Republicans in congress of course, voted against every single gun safety bill to come before congress.
Excerpt from Biden's speech,
"Today, guns — I never thought I’d even remotely say this in my whole career — guns are the number one killer of children in America. Guns are the number one killer of children in America — the United States of America. More than car accidents, more than cancer, more than other diseases.
In 2023 so far, our country has experienced more than 500 mass shootings and well over 30,000 deaths due to gun violence. That’s just totally unacceptable. It’s not who we are. And we have to act, and we have to act now.
"After every mass shooting, we hear a simple message — the same message heard all over the country, and I’ve been to every mass shooting: Do something. Please do something. Do something to prevent the tragedies that leave behind survivors who will always carry the physical and emotional scars, families who will never be the same, communities overwhelmed by grief and trauma. Do something. Do something.Well, my administration has been working relentlessly to do something.
To date, my administration has announced dozens of executive actions to reduce gun violence — more than any of my predecessors at this point in their presidencies. And they include everything from cracking down on ghost guns, breaking up gun trafficking, and so much more. (Applause.)
And last year, with the help — your help, I signed into law the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act: the most significant gun safety law in almost 30 years. (Applause.) It strengthens background checks, expands the use of red flag laws, improves access to mental health services, and so much more.
This historic law will save lives. It’s a really important first step."

@badminton Dems and the GOP together deliver high crash death rates, high poverty death rates and endless wars! Americans don't need alternatives.
Some might, especially if the laws are aimed at other than their base, for example transgendered people or liberals.
Come to think about it, remember all the hubub about Black Panthers a few years back?
The thing is, Republicans these days don't really seem as interested in principles as much as "for me and not for thee."

Libs never let a tragedy go to waste. We have all the gun laws anyone could need. Being a liberal, it seems you don't understand the Second Amendment of the Constitution.
SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED !!!
Since Mr. Kirk was killed during a question about transgender individuals being responsible for the recent rash of mass shootings in the US, one could anticipate that a transgender person assassinated him.
We need to update and enforce the laws regarding mental illness. We need stricter laws on assault trannies who perpetrate these horrible crimes, not infringement of our constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. No law can be passed that would affect our rights to keep and bear arms lawfully, and there certainly are not enough votes in Congress to amend the 2A. The gun did not fire itself, nor plan this assassination. A sick, deranged, malicious individual or individuals did.
When those responsible are caught, Utah has the death penalty awaiting them should they get convicted.

probably not. if your opinion on gun laws isn't swayed by the primary cause of death among children being gun violence then nothing will. I just expect more division
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
@Firewarrior both parties care deeply about the population and keeping the guns is important.
Firewarrior · M
@Roundandroundwego No to all of that. Sadly they dont care about the population , or at least certain parts of it, and guns are not important in the way we in the us have them.

Maybe focus on the issue not the instrument ?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
No. The supreme Court would over rule any such law. Even if there was a vote to overrule a presidential veto. Which surely would happen.
The 5th amendment must be rewriting before the anything can be done. The supreme Court is in this up to their necks.

@sunsporter1649 So a man claiming we need these shootings to maintain a right to defend ourselves against tyranny has died from someone exercising the right he protected while engaging in tyranny against a minority? Do I have that correct?

@KateATX I'm from the USA and I understand you. Not interested in reducing the number of shootings, Americans don't need a third party. The shootings are important to US society. Like the crash deaths. They make the population conservative and violent.

Why would you want stricter gun laws now? Charlie Kirk was the mastermind behind the MAGA movement and was instrumental in getting Trump Elected to the Presidency. Trump didn't get himself there, Charlie and a few others did!
