Was Trump's ascendance into presidency predictable?

When you really zoom out of it, he was a super rich guy with a lot of connections, including hanging out with Epstein, who basically had influence over all the money men in the world. Trump was happy to do whatever made him money, which is exactly the kind of person the rich want in power. And elections can be predicted by campaign spending

I think he's a byproduct of the social media landscape we've all been sucked into.

People don't have much of an attention span and want immediate gratification. They can't articulate why they believe what they believe, but they always wanna be right about everything. They judge others for their differences, but feel targeted when judged by others. They preach simple solutions to complex problems, but never bother understanding the root causes.

Trump rambles on so meanderingly, people lose the plot of what he was saying. They associate Republicans with God and country, so they can just pat themselves on the back for being so righteous and patriotic regardless of his policies.

Trump supporters think he's playing 4D chess with all the dumb comments he makes and try to justify his ineptitude as part of a grand strategy to achieve some noble goal. Like he's a master manipulator that knows all the right buttons to push.

Trump has spoken ill of so many different people and groups, but the minute any media pundit tries to hold him accountable for it, suddenly the media is part of a conspiracy against him.

We are living in the age where Facebook and Twitter has rewired our brains to seeking only pleasure from our reward centers and belligerently denying any sense of social responsibility. It's all about reaction content these days, and Trump's arrogance and need for validation constantly puts him at the forefront of generating reactions

I think it was. It wasn't even about money, or in his case, perceived wealth.

He has had an interest in politics since the 80's. He often talked about running for president.

I think his foray into TV and movies was a way to make himself a public figure.

I think he just didn't see a strong road to the White House, till 2012 when Steve Bannon and he became friends and Bannon helped him form a path. Since Breitbart had such a strong alt right following, and the ideology of The Heritage Project seeing that trump was following what Bannon was suggesting, which they support, helped as well.

With all of that taking place, it seems a small leap to convince a narcissistic man like trump to run. I don't know if they could have found a better puppet to take the spot, to be honest.

@FoxyQueen the thing is, some of the stuff he says is what people believe, but his execution seems to be disastrous and counterproductive to even the original cause

@plungesponge Welcome to Megolomania! Where you believe everything that comes out of your mouth is golden and needs to be logged down for prosperity.

He stepped away from the cause ages ago. It isn't his point anymore. Hus point is saying things that make his supporters adore him, or what he views as adoration. He abandoned purpose a while back.

To be honest, I really believe that his inner circle whisper conspiratory things in his ear before he has any public speech to get him set off on some tangent where he says he will do even more heinous things, and since he said it, his cabinet works to make it so he can, which was their plan all along, but now they can say they are just acting on his words. And because a lot of it has to do with restricting or removing rights from people his followers have been manipulated to hate, they love it.
All too predictable, IMO. Trump's lack of conscience, honesty and self interest give him a huge advantage politically over traditional politicians.

Not predictable. All of his opponents in all parties took predictable actions... and still are... and don't know how to manage an unpredictable situation. That's the story... and the horror behind the story. So, now it's a matter of an unpredictable presidency imploding by its own grandiose incompetence and emphasis on table-read compliments around the advisor table.

@MarkPaul who would you saw has the best chance of beating him, I guess by not being predictable like the other contenders? I think Bernie but maybe too old
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@plungesponge Sadly, it is too soon to tell. The problem with Bernie isn't his age, although that is a factor. The reality is he isn't electable on a national level. The predictability of the Democrats is they want to make a social statement like "it's time to elect a woman," it's time to elect a black woman," "Obama wasn't originally considered electable and he won," etc.

The entire (100%) focus needs to be on winning an election. This isn't the time to take a chance, to make a vanity statement, or write "a strongly worded letter" (Chuck Schumer). Who can win to wrest control back? It might FEEL like Kamala Harris should get another CHANCE... but she is not electable. That might not be a nice statement, but that is reality. A gay guy is not electable. That might be a wrong attitude, but that is reality. At this point, in this climate, under these circumstances winning the election should be the ONLY objective.

JB Pritzker and Gavin Newsom and Wes Moore are certainly gaining traction as electable, but it is too soon to tell. And it shouldn't be (can't be) based on the colour of their skin. And after winning, whoever it is, needs to swiftly transition the objective by having the fortitude, the public interest, and the focus to lock-in (through legislation, not executive order) safeguards to block this type of assault from happening again... similar to the safeguards that were legislated after the Civil War, after Prohibition, after the (Joe) McCarthy reign of terror, after Nixon, etc.
