I think he's a byproduct of the social media landscape we've all been sucked into.
People don't have much of an attention span and want immediate gratification. They can't articulate why they believe what they believe, but they always wanna be right about everything. They judge others for their differences, but feel targeted when judged by others. They preach simple solutions to complex problems, but never bother understanding the root causes.
Trump rambles on so meanderingly, people lose the plot of what he was saying. They associate Republicans with God and country, so they can just pat themselves on the back for being so righteous and patriotic regardless of his policies.
Trump supporters think he's playing 4D chess with all the dumb comments he makes and try to justify his ineptitude as part of a grand strategy to achieve some noble goal. Like he's a master manipulator that knows all the right buttons to push.
