Trump says the U.S. has 'too many' holidays. How about a new one? "National Bonespurs Awareness Day."

If anything, we do not have enough!

I'd add...

January 30th - FDR's birthday
February 12th - Lincoln's birthday (fyi: so-called "President's Day" is actually Washington's birthday and not for all presidents)
September 2 - World War II Victory Day (not May 8th as Trump thinks, but May 8th would be fine for Truman's birthday)
September 3 - V-B Day ("Victory Over Britain" - the signing of the Treaty of Paris and recognition of the United States)
September 17 - Constitution Day (would help Americans to know their rights if readings of the Constitution were widespread)

First Tuesday after the first Monday in November - Citizenship Day (which would happen to be the date for federal elections)

November 11 - revert "Veterans Day" back to "Armistice Day" - the end of World War I

And let's create a new holiday to specific thank our living veterans. The best day would be Flag Day, but since we don't want Trump to think it's a holiday for him, make it the third Saturday in May (currently Armed Forces Day, which celebrates those serving) but since the branches all have their own day, this new designation would honor living veterans.

And, of course, leave all the other federal holidays in place.

If Trump wants a holiday for himself, I suggestion "National Bonespurs Awareness Day." Make it the day he dodged the draft. Oh, wait. Which time would that be, since there was more than one time?

I thought President’s Day was supposed to celebrate the birthdays of both Washington and Lincoln? Otherwise why not just celebrate Washington’s birthday on Washington’s birthday?

I don’t really like the idea of making historical figures’ birthdays holidays, because what’s the best way to kill a movement? Commemorate it.

I guess the war victory holidays would be okay if you’re just looking for an excuse to let people off work.

Constitution Day would be a good idea if instead of letting people off work you instead mandated some sort of Constitution-related activities at schools. Not sure how that would work though. Because if you just let people off work, who’s actually going to bother to go to a public “Constitution reading”? And if they do go, who’s going to be able to stay awake for the whole thing?

Making Election Day a holiday is, imho, your best idea here. Citizenship Day is fine, but as far as I’m concerned any excuse will do.

Just my thoughts.

Many people think that. They're wrong.

It's a "good excuse" for learning about why so many Americans sacrificed their lives to save others from tryranny.
Trump is scrapping the constitution.

September 17 – Constitution Day
Yes. As you say, readings of the Constitution could become civic rituals. Americans knowing their rights shouldn't be partisan—it should be national.
I don't get holidays, I clean your toilets as an independent contractor, legal everywhere capitalism wins, so I get no vacation, no sick days, no holidays.
You impress me bigly, there's always someone like me cleaning your toilet but not your employee, exploited. Yours don't stink! You are the country, you wouldn't do these jobs and yet you go to the toilet. You impress everyone!
@beckyromero because you should ditch people who fail on purpose, not pretend that critique is all you need to do.
The USA unanimously votes for the politics that's killing them fast. It's not like you had no choice.

@Roundandroundwego

You do realize that there are 100 Senators and 435 House Members and that I can only vote for 2 U.S. Senators (they come up for staggered elections for a six year term) and 1 House Member (every two years)? And that I can only vote for 1 state Senator and one IL House Rep.

I've worked on winning campaigns and losing campaigns and consulting work.

But there is no magic wand to fix things overnight.
@beckyromero Americans would have to really care and really want change, the nation would have to bolt from the Dems and the GOP and form authentic political movements behind actual candidates for peace and socialism to avert the current disaster. Sorry that's impossible.
The daughters of a Queens foot doctor say their late father diagnosed President Donald Trump with bone spurs to help him avoid the Vietnam War draft as a “favor” to his father Fred Trump, according to a new report Wednesday.

Dr. Larry Braunstein, a podiatrist who died in 2007, often told the story of providing Donald Trump with the diagnosis of bone spurs in his heels so he could be exempt from military service, his two daughters – Dr. Elysa Braunstein and Sharon Kessel – told the New York Times.

Would that include people with (fake) bone spurs as diagnosed for by a doctor coerced by Daddy's money?

@Muthafukajones
so there isn’t a standard set of federal holidays with pay in the US? I think it’s 13 or 14 in Canada.

Correct. Many employers do not pay for specific or all holidays if employee doesn't work or many employers do no pay employees extra for working on a holiday.

@beckyromero @beckyromero what I’m asking is if you have a set list of national federal holidays that all people are paid. The list might be very short. Christmas for example and New Years but there must be a basic list?
beckyromero · 36-40, FVIP
@Muthafukajones

There is no such list.

Some employers pay for all federal holidays. Some only pay for selected ones. Some pay for NONE.

Some workers benefit from union contracts. Non-union employees fare worse.

Federal and state workers generally get paid, but again, there is nothing standard.

It may be difficult to believe, especially because many retirees remember the "good old days" when they got double and triple time or got a paid day off, but there are many employers who do not give employees a paid holiday off or pay them extra for working on a holiday. And, yes, that is even the case with Christmas and New Year's.
