is the obvious answer, but the problem is that our Constitution, in reality, disallows a united country.
Don't get me wrong, the idea of our Constitution is for a somewhat utopian nation, and yet in its wording set up a country divided.
Our Constitution establishes a republic, not a democracy, and therein lies the problem with unity. Then, after establishing a republic, the power was given to separate states to self-govern.
To have unity, you must have the will of the majority as the driving force, not of those in power.
By definition, a republic is a representative form of government that is ruled according to a charter, or constitution, and a democracy is a government that is ruled according to the will of the majority.
I love our country, served it in uniform, and went to war for our country, but it is in crisis.
Greatness in this context is not about size and numbers …. It’s about a system that paves the path of democracy through culture, education, and healthy politic …
"Make America Great Again" has been forever tarnished, rather like "Deutschland über alles." Therefore, anything derived from it, even as a rejection of it, is tainted as a serious slogan.
Food for thought. The term united is in need of refining. The perfectly united country, if I really use that term strictly, is one with a dictator as a leader. I keep hearing someone stating that we need to unite, but that same person tries to divide the population at every turn, unless they agree with him.

When Americans accepted their election, president, and when the presidents considered every American as the nation for whose benefit they had to plan and work .. not very far …
Yeah united in ignorance and lost-ness and greed. In total contempt for the human spirit. United in giving in to the most common denominator in choosing our leaders, destroying splendid alternatives and debasing ourselves and our children's futures at the same time we blather about change and greatness.
United in the unreality of what we are doing to the planet and our own most precious dreams for our Mother Earth and its human family
United in giving up on dreams of peace justice and sustainability anywhere for anyone, United in embracing a horrid unnatural death for this planet and all life on it. UNITED IN LYING ABOUT ALL THIS. Not telling the truth effectively is almost like not telling it at all.
But the actuality is the unity we have now is pretty much like what I said
The rest is divisiveness and wistful dreams. I cant lie. The truth is way too frightening. But without knowing the reality of USA's position
theres no dream to ever come true
I WANT UNITY OF LOVE AND PURPOSE. And for the majority of the usa that means more guns and unnecessary death worldwide, more countries used up for the sake of usa's paranoia and war mongering and more powerful cultures like yours made to look like a dangerous enemy. Sanctions. Threats. Saber rattling. Will some of the world be forced to act a certain way cause another country holds all the strings?
America now thinks its supposed to hate and wanna make war on China too. South America and Europe is all right wing again and it shows. People have way fewer real choices for life here than ever. That's positively challenging but few people see it so.
You were always an ambassador of Peace here. You do more than your part in making a nicer SW. Warm and hopeful. But you need a bigger role, like Mayor of the World. Its something to dream about. We all love you very much too.
Until it comes true I too can dream.
We need a greater chance for real positivity here not just wistful musings and beautiful art.
I like to share songs like Ombra Mai Fu by Handel. In my best world all sentient creatures would be praying/singing out exquisite songs like that. I strive for social and political harmony/justice like they did in the European "classical" era.
and I know dreams always have to come first or they can never come true...
Thank you for being an ambassador of Unity Peace and beautiful art... right here in e-land!!.
Both slogans evoke powerful aspirations. 'Let’s Make America Great Again' speaks to a vision of progress and excellence, while 'Let’s Make America United Again' emphasizes unity and solidarity. Each carries its own resonance depending on the context and vision for the future. What matters most is the spirit behind the slogan and our collective efforts towards a better America for all.
@Soossie well we are getting there. when Trump ran the first time, everybody hated him. he did his best but he was not well prepared. now he is and more and more are jumping on the Trump train. we will turn this around again
Neither one. Nostalgia for a past Golden Age is a feature of fascism. This raises the question of why the Golden Age ended. This is then blamed on a scapegoat and next thing you know, people are being killed.
I agree about nostalgia for golden ages causing fascism … but I doubt if unity has got anything to do with golden ages … neither greatness… However, I believe that everyone desires greatness through unity and political and cultural democracy ..
@Soossie Unity is great, but America has never been unified, except maybe during World War Two. It's depressing to think that the only way we can come together is if we're at war. Although every war since then has only exacerbated divisions.
Considering how some places are united in misery, united may not be a good slogan to cheer us on.
BUT ... I prefer calling us the United States of America rather than America. We can be united and different; just united and respectful of one another and our differences is good enough for me. .
Considering how some places are united in misery, united may not be a good slogan to cheer us on.
I fully agree, that is why "United States of America" doesn't work either. Truth is, "USA" has transformed itself into another oxymoron... like "American Intelligence".
Really, American Intelligence, after this last Election for POTUS?🤔
@swirlie "United" like in United States is a good reference to the relationship between states. All 50 of us are unique, yet united. Maybe not all states at any one time, but most of us are.
One thing that may not be apparent to non-US observers is that most states are indeed united and most of us citizens are pretty happy. Actually, even states like California which seems to have a disproportional share of miserable people , those miserable people are pretty much clustered in just 5 or 6 areas, and not the entire state.
From my own vantage point in Kansas, last week's election is like a breath of fresh air. One way to explain it is that with the new administration and congress, the pockets of misery in the US will at least hold their borders and not spread to Kansas or anywhere near Kansas, It's like "what happens in San Francisco thankfully stays in San Francisco." Likewise for LA, NYC, and another dozen other clusters of misery. Heck, maybe some of those miserable people will see how happy we are here in the Heartlands and it will inspire them to clean up their mess..
There was a time when people just had different opinions that had nothing to do with politics. I wish we could go back to that. Let’s all start thinking for ourselves again!
@Soossie That’s the way it was taught when I was growing up. But, when majority rules becomes minority (population) rules, it gets a lot more volatile. It’s what we’re in the middle of right now. The hard right have found a chink in the armor - people eventually get sick of the tail wagging the dog.
This is going to end just like his campaign initially with Hillary. The Dems are going to cause their own defeat because of their candidate’s public image.
@Soossie but, you are buying into the concept that the US isn't a great country now! We have our problems, but if we are not already great, why do so many from so many places try to get here? We do need to go a 'more perfect" union, one that supports equal justice and such things as access to health care, clean air and water, safe workplaces, etc., all the things that have been the goal for hundreds of years.
Hi Sam … I’m afraid you’re judging me (AGAIN) …. I’m thinking about your former president’s next speech in the Republicans Convention and about his next slogan … that’s all ..
@Soossie I am not really "judging you." But, I am commenting on the words you chose. Words do matter. We all need to watch the words we use, I agree I need to be as well. They can be misinterpreted and become weapons.
He has already said that God saved him, and I can only imagine what his party will do with that.
@lpthehermit As in what product(s)? The US citizen wants access to inexpensive goods, the big corporations want to increase their profit margins, so how do US corporations compete? Do you suggest decreasing hourly wages? Do you really believe that adding tariffs, aka taxes, to the cost of products from other countries will encourage US industry to increase production?
@lpthehermit why bother when you have elected a man who’s broken so many laws between heaven and earth. How about so trickle down morality from the top. If the people on top won’t obey laws why should you think the people at the bottom should behave any better.
@Soossie because some people aren't worth being unified with. If you had a town full of murderers would it reflect on you that that they don't want to be friends?
@Soossie True unity is all encompassing and due to our reality if you had that it would be the antithesis to greatness and unity at lesser levels would be exclusionary so any system that defines unity as a requirement for greatness would be self defeating. I think unity is entirely unrelated as a concept in that neither has an effect on the status of the other, why should they
America has never truly been united throughout history so they both seem a little like propaganda to me but I think that "Great" sounds more comprehensive.
But you need a well thought slogan and strategy to have a functional slogan … that MAGA was a good slogan but the strategy was wrong and it made America multi-polar politically and less great …
american conservative here. i'm convinced that we are all capable of holding opposing views and beliefs while simultaneously working together. the impediments aren't impossible to overcome
Neither, because neither have any relevance today nor ever did.
There is no such thing as "The United States" because the entire concept of a democracy is the opposite of uniting, which is why the USA is not actually united within it's democratic process... because it can't be by definition!
To 'unite' means to bring together as one, but in a democracy, both sides are suppose to oppose each other which is what democracy means... to have opposing views and to stand in support of a party which supports your own political views.
The only true political system that can be called "united" is a dictatorship, where everyone agrees with the dictator whether you agree with him or not. Those who live within a dictatorship government are united in purpose and intent as dictated by that country's government.
For anyone to think that they can unite the people of the United States of America, simply doesn't understand the concept of a democracy in the first place.
To 'unite' means to bring together as one, but in a democracy, both sides are suppose to oppose each other which is what democracy means
In democracy a country is governed and controlled by an organization elected by the majority of the population, then unity finds its concept is the context of democracy … because people who believe in democracy accept the choice of the majority while using their freedom to disagree with their planning, strategies, and way of controlling the country for a certain time …
The only true political system that can be called "united" is a dictatorship, where everyone agrees with the dictator whether you agree with him or not. Those who live within a dictatorship government are united in purpose and intent as dictated by that country's government.
Not correct … people usually oppose the dictator leaders and government … they might unite against oppression but never with the dictatorship … believe me and take my word for it …
@Handfull1 Okay, I understand what you're saying, but what you are actually referring to is the perception you once had about the USA and how things appeared to be going from your perspective.
Keep in mind that the USA was a poor, almost decrepit place during the 1930's and when the USA began selling a false sense of greatness to the American people by using borrowed money to build America into what it became during the 1950's and 1960's, it led the average American to believe that the USA can achieve it all by default because of it's apparent greatness!
What nobody ever told Joe American however, was that it was all created with borrowed money from the bank, not money that the USA had in it's savings account.
What followed that misleading self-awareness of country, was America's failure to pay-back the loans it acquired for itself to buy all that sh*t which to this very day, America has never repaid to it's creditors!
This is the reason why the USA is now $35Trillion in national debt and why the American infrastructure is crumbling around itself because there is no money to replace it AND no credit available to borrow even more money to service the national debt's monthly interest payment.
Like I said, America has never been a great place, but the appearance that it was a great place is still stuck in every American's mind who is old enough to remember what it was like at the circus when everything appeared to be free.
That appearance came with a price and that price was fake greatness.
