Sorry guys, I'm out ...

... of politics, that is.

I'm so disgusted with my country's politics that I just can't. We are going to elect a president this autumn and the two best people we can put up there for consideration are Trump and Biden? Really? Sorry, but I am out.

This doesn't make me any less political as a person. I may continue to write about my passionate views on our individual rights as free persons, but I see this election as a chose between the lessor of two evils.

I grew up very engaged in electoral politics. I participated in mock government programs and even argued my positions in the well of the Massachusetts Senate Chamber. I'm NOT pulling back here out of apathy or indifference, but out of disgust.

I turned 18 in 2013 so my first presidential choice was 2016:
- 2016: Trump v Clinton
- 2020: Trump v Biden
- 2024: Trump v Biden, the sequel

I have friends here from every corner of the political map and I love you all, but I just can't. So, many of you may have noticed that I've already stopped hearting or replying to your political posts. Please don't take this as any kind of repudiation (or support) of one side or the other. I'm just out. 😐

Trump is the best bet. At least he is honest
@mysteryespresso I’m voting for Biden because we need a young man in that office.
@LeopoldBloom you think Biden would be replaced
@mysteryespresso Only if he dies or has a serious health crisis.
krf336 · M
I cant discuss politics on places like this anymore either.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@krf336 Oh this is not just a "on here" thing. This started last night with my family. I'm out. I'm just out. 🙊
krf336 · M
@sarabee1995 ya, that is annoying as well
dumasme · 51-55, M
Well, if we start on the premise that all those in politics are liars, we eliminate that piece of the equation, right? Trump, Clinton, Biden, Harris... none of them are better than the other.

So, where to go from there? Party? Republican v Democrat... now we have competing ideologies so, which is it economics v social issues? big gov v big companies? social programs? I don't think so. this also seems too narrow. The POTUS, senate & reps are constitutionally bound to their lanes.

So, i like to try and figure out WHO they'll nominate to cabinet and other govt roles. Here, it becomes a bit more visible. when a nominee bows to the party line and they are going to plop in the latest name from the Council On Foreign Relations (CFR), I have to choose the douchebag over the 'nicer' person because he is a little more independent minded. I think this is the only difference between candidates.

For background, see 'Shadowring' and 'State of Mind: The Psychology of Control' - Free Mind Films'
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@dumasme Oh how anti-democratic of you!!! 🤣🤣🤣

I actually agree 100%. The People's voice is expressed through the House as was always intended. The States' voices were supposed to be expressed through the Senate and the Electoral College. No one today understands that.
dumasme · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995 yes, anti-democratic... However, the USA is NOT a democracy, right? We are a democratic REPUBLIC. The people have a say in WHO represents us and other than specific issues on ballots, that is it. Our representatives are charged with carrying out our will in government. Unfortunately, and i think our forefathers had it right, the common citizen doesn't know (or care) enough to be involved with the day-to-day operations of government.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@dumasme We are not far apart on this. 👍
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
I've tried periodically to get engaged with party politics, but it's always been a struggle. Even in the 2000s when I came of age and our country was most receptive to reform and adventure. Unfortunately local politics too has become contaminated by partisan national issues in recent years.

It's definitely possible though to remain interested in good government and passionate about public affairs without attaching yourself to a party. That's a trick I learned while a civil servant 🙂
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@SunshineGirl
"...interested in good government and passionate about public affairs without attaching yourself to a party."
This has been me my whole life.
ArtieKat · M
We face a similar dilemma (for different reasons) here in the UK. I dislike intensely our local MP but I couldn't see a viable alternative in the General Election. Marvin, the cat, sorted it out for me: when I went into my office this morning he had puked up all over my voting card. I guess I'm abstaining!

I'm right there with you, I've been boycotting all news in general the last few days, and I hope I can continue to ignore all news. I don't care or want to know about Israel, Ukraine, Biden, Trump, Congress, or Hunter.

Regardless you still need to vote
pdockal · 56-60, M
@sarabee1995

Never said you should vote for either as I'm in agreement .... was just saying regardless of the choices we all need to exercise our right to vote ... i haven't missed any either
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@pdockal We are in agreement here. 🙂
pdockal · 56-60, M
Cherry2 · 22-25, F
You should think about voting 3rd party.
We know that person won’t win but if we could get enough votes we would be letting the two mainstream parties know they are losing their grip on the country.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Cherry2 I did vote third party last time. I'm very aware of the need to send a message to the two majors, and also to get another team on the debate stage.
Cherry2 · 22-25, F
@sarabee1995 I think this year I will write in my vote.
@Cherry2 I live in a swing state and will not vote third party until we have ranked-choice voting.
Northwest · M
Forget about the two front runners. Why didn't we have any credible candidates (and by that, I mean someone who does not have a dead worm in his brain), emerge on top, during the primaries?

Unfortunately, what you see is what you got, and we still have to make a choice, and the contrast between the candidates cannot be underemphasized.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Northwest Point taken.

Personally I rail against the duopoly represented by our two parties every election cycle, but too many Americans are single-issue voters. They find the party that aligns with their position on the single issue and then poof that party can do no wrong. 😔
@sarabee1995 Biden is hardly the most extreme member of his party.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@LeopoldBloom Sorry. I'm not engaging in discussions regarding the dismal choice before us this year. 😔
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
Does this mean you’ll have more time for dimple admiration in the future? 🤔🤣

Hey little sister, I totally get where you are coming from. I haven’t been active on the politics posts online in a very long time.

Yeah, same here. I am going away today to celebrate the birthday of a hardcore socialist and on Thursday I'm going out after work with a huge Trump fan 🤭

@BritishFailedAesthetic Life can be more than one's politics.
@sarabee1995 Exactly!
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
Elessar · 31-35, M
One's campaigning on dismantling the nation and democracy as is (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_2025) and essentially turning the US into Russia on steroids.

Not voting against that would be something I'd greatly regret, if it was my country. No matter how weak are the other option(s).
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Elessar 🤷‍♀️
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
If you do not vote for one.. you could get the other - everyone needs to pick the lessor evil because the alternative is worse.. Notice that the ONLY thing I am suggesting is that you must cast a ballot.. not for whom it should be for.. and yes the choices truly leave much to be desired..

I look at the Muslims in Michigan who say they can not vote for Biden because of his support for Israel.. and I laugh.. like from their position Trump winning is a better outcome? The alternative is for them FAR worse than who they refuse to consider.. So do they need to hold their nose and pick a stinky option? Yup.. sucks and nothing can be done about it.. .
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@pdqsailor1 I never said I wasn't going to vote. I've never not voted when eligible.

And these two will not be the only two on the ballot here in Massachusetts.

But in my opinion, for me, these two have disqualified themselves from the job.

Now I ask, please, leave me out of conversations on this presidential cycle. I really don't want to discuss it.
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 my response was based on what you said about being out. No discussion what so ever
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
Who you vote for is your right and your choice
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@vetguy1991 Of course, but that is not what this is about. 😔
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995 i know people unfortunately take political disagreements far too personal

ShadowSister · 51-55, F
My daughter asked me why I put up a sign in the yard for one of the candidates. (I'm sure you can easily guess which one.) I told her, it's not that I like the guy. In fact, I think he's bad for the country. But he's bad like eating junk food is bad, while the other guy is bad like taking cyanide.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@ShadowSister Sorry, again, like I said, I'm not discussing this years presidential contest. 🤷‍♀️
ShadowSister · 51-55, F
@sarabee1995 lol fair enough. The point was just that I think it's almost a consensus that we have only bad options. But we can be done now.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F

I feel the same way. We have over 300M people and we can't find better??? 🤦🏻‍♂️
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Livingwell 🤦‍♀️
Royrogers · 61-69, M
Am not from the USA, but it is amazing how in a country of millions ir more, the two contenders are these two
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Royrogers Sadly, I agree.
RunTheJulz · 46-50, F
Don’t vote. It only makes you complicit…
RunTheJulz · 46-50, F
@sarabee1995 I understand your frustration and your sentiment but in a state that is a pseudo-democratic duopoly you’re wasting your time. And for me it’s a moral obligation to oppose a government which does not deserve my vote. I have never voted and I suspect I never will. Most of the US military doesn’t vote because they know it doesn’t matter… it’s more symbolic than political and it’s not actually going to change anything in the course that the country takes. If you don’t believe me then watch this election cycle and you’ll see this. An entitled bigot will most likely win… sad as that is for me to say and to see.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@RunTheJulz I'm in the US Military and most people I know track the elections very closely and vote.

There's much else in your reply here to which I would normally reply, but like I said, I'm out. Please don't engage me on this subject.
RunTheJulz · 46-50, F
@sarabee1995 I wasn’t trying to start a discussion or an argument and I am sorry for not remembering your military service. Perhaps it’s just a special forces and upper echelon leadership tradition for the military to abstain from the ballot box?
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
Fully Understandable
New Zealand are still taking immigrants I think.
Refugees anyway 🤣
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 I was meaning New Zealand would take you 🤗

It wasn't pointed at any issues in the US.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@KiwiBird Oh! I totally missed that. With everything going on right now in my life I think that would be perfect!!!
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 I realise you missed my intent and I didn't realise immigration was such an issue domestically in the US.

Sara for President
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@MarineBob Thank you, but "If nominated, I will not run and if elected, I will not serve." I have no interest in that job. I don't feel qualified.

We need people who will serve the best interests of this country, not the agendas of either party. We need someone who seeks the betterment of all its people, not personal power or wealth. Ugh, sorry.

Are you judging by optics or by policy impact?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@sarabee1995
This is why I've supported both Bernie Sanders and Marco Rubio in the past.

😳
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@sarabee1995 Joking aside, I do kind of get it. With me though, it's all about policy. I get why a candidate matters for strategic reasons but in terms of what I would vote for, it makes almost no difference.

Though on strategy: the Democrats should never have run Biden again. A generic Democrat would have beaten Trump but I don't think Biden will.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Burnley123 I could not possibly care less about party strategy. Mostly that is because I consider our two major parties to be the major source of our problems. And, yes, I include them both in that statement.

The parties don't care about a single issue. They pursue one thing and one thing only and that is power. They flip on issues all the time in the pursuit of power.

So, sorry, no, I don't care if running this candidate or that candidate is better strategy for this party or that party.
Straylight · 31-35, F
I’ve been sick of politics sense 2016. And it wasn’t even the candidates, I was just sick of hearing about it.

@jshm2 It's the deals that worry me. Over the last seven years in the Navy and working for DoD, I've made tons of connections at DoD and over at State and other places. Tons.

But I've also seen first hand some of the "deals" that others have made. It's disgusting. I used to dream of someday being "Madam Secretary" of some cabinet department. There isn't enough money in the US Treasury to get me to take that job today for exactly this reason.

A very big part of me thinks I should just return to the Cape full time and run a champagne & sunset charter service with my boat.

@sarabee1995 it's so hard to resist the temptation to say what I really think. I know that I can, but it comes with a price. If you wanted a safe place, you and I could DM. I don't get emotional if someone disagrees with me like 98% of the public seems to.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@uncalled4 We've not really engaged much on here, but I've seen you around a lot and seen you interacting with people I respect a lot. My point is that I don't usually welcome DMs, but in your case I would. Just know I don't do pics (send or receive) and I keep it respectful always. :)
