Yes. Democracy is good, too. The USA isn't a country at all by those metrics.

TinyViolins · 31-35, M
That's what Andrew Yang was talking about in his campaign for President. There's really no good reason why we have to prioritize GDP. Even the guy that created GDP, Simon Kuznets, wrote that it was a terrible measure of the health of a nation. It doesn't measure anything that makes life worth living or what makes a country great.

Yang talked about things like happiness, freedom from substance abuse, better mental health scores, clean air and water, and other metrics like that should be part of the national discussion. Because really, who bases any of their life decisions on what the GDP is?

I've been watching Tulsi and she's been giving clear signals that she's not a Democrat and may even switch over to the GOP. Anyone who's served, has earned my respect.

@PatKirby

I could never understand why she was a Democrat. Nothing about her would lead you to believe she was. I guess that's why the Dem establishment hates her. I hope she does switch parties.

Cruz/Gabbard ticket?

The Scandinavian countries would be far ahead
@revenant she was from Slovakian.

@littlepuppywantanewlife i had guessed that
@revenant seriously? You knew that? 😳
Yes, and it is. There is a livability index for nations. I think some measure of contentment is part of it.
@quitwhendone It is but its not important enough to make policy on
@Ozymandiaz Who is making the policies?
@quitwhendone mostly corporations
Driver2 · M
Sounds silly , what matters is everyone’s personal happiness
Driver2 · M
@Ozymandiaz because happiness is an individual feeling
@Driver2 everything is an individual thing from wealth to health. By those standards nothing should be measured or used to inform policy.

That would be interesting.
They already have that in some form "best country to live in" but I feel it is more of an economic status overall
@revenant if teleportation was possible. 🤪
@revenant they do. But its not used to form policy
revenant · F
@Ozymandiaz policies changing natural human psychology ?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Yes, yet not likely to happen in a so called "free market" economy.

And if by some odd chance it was done, it just wouldn't be "advertised".

That's exactly what happens in a free market economy. The important things get hushed up due to simply not being known about.

Sadly GDP will always come first.

I seem to recall that in Bhutan it's all but illegal to be unhappy. Also alcohol and tobacco are banned. It's a Buddhist kingdom.
@Entwistle I was reading a bit about Bhutan. Thats where the question came from.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Ozymandiaz Cool. I've seen a documentary about Bhutan. As a tourist you need £200 spending money per day to be allowed in. It seems pretty exclusive when it comes to allowing tourists in.

@BetweenKittensandRiots I dont live in Finland. But I have decided to do an online degree with a university based there because I can as being a citizen of the EU. That made me happy.
@Ozymandiaz Yeah The social support system in Norway has made it blow everyone else out of the park which does NOT make sense because seasonal effective disorder is SUPER common and it's so far north- but the social support system completely overrides that.

It is on many lists. Several reliable sources compose a list the happiest nations in the world, ranked only by asking citizens questions along their daily range of satisfaction. Some of the poorest nations on the planet rate highest on this list. It's our country's fatal fascination with bigger, better, stronger, faster and our tendency to equate happiness with wealth, power and status that keeps us so unhappy. We're the DJ Khaled of the world.

Check outthe World Happiness Report's map; it's interesting.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
How "Gross" are we talking here? Like people so happy they throw up on each other?
@GerOttman Whatever kink makes you happy 😛
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
It depends on how the word 'Gross' is being interpreted.
@TheConstantGardener Rate your overall happiness on a scale of 1-10. Something like that I would think.
Here is one livability index. There are others.

@quitwhendone It is measured but it does not inform policy
We're doooomed
