I Will Not Sugar Coat What Is Happening in Afghanistan. It Is Bad, Will Get Worse and Could Have Been Prevented.

People never learn from History. Britain had three Afghan Wars; Russia had one or two. The Sikhs occupied Eastern Afghan- all had to fight for their lives, but this present situation is disgraceful.

@beckyromero Jackson certainly won the skirmish at New Orleans. He sat tight and fired his cannon at a stationary British force commanded by the stupidest officer in the British Army, then refused to leave safety to finish his little victory. That allowed the British to withdraw and regather, to capture an American fort a few days later, ready for the next round. So the British victory was the last action of the war.
The British held Canada with some ease (the object of the US) and once Britain defeated France, - the US major ally - the US was looking for peace. With her trade shattered and her maritime areas suffering, she could do little else.
British power in Canada and the Caribbean remained as it was as the US continued its aggression against Spain, a nation weakened by years of war.

😂

Now, now. That's not a nice thing to say about the brother-in-law of The Duke of Wellington.
British power in Canada...
Britain hardly used Canada as a base of power. But there was really no need to do so after the war. Peace was secured.

@beckyromero It was Wellington who called him that. No other general would take the job in the Americas- not with the Congress of Vienna in full swing and the possibility of glory if Bonaparte returned.
And Canada remained Britain's power base in North America. Not that there were many soldiers stationed there (The British army was always tiny) - it was Canadian militia that saw off the 1867 invasion from south of the Border.

Yeah, it's pretty bad what's been happening in Afghanistan over the past 20 years. I just hope Afghanistan one day embraces freedom, democracy, and secularism, but that's unfortunately a pipe-dream in itself. Ah well, at least the US & UK are done killing people there.
Some of the articles in the media about this over the last few days are terrifying to even watch from the other side of the world.

At times, I wonder if freedom of the press is such a good thing to have after all - especially when we are watching human beings falling off the sides of aeroplanes to their inevitable death and looking at photo after photo of what is obviously the shadow of a dead body.

That's traumatic shit for those who are there and have to witness it... but, at least they are more likely to get help to overcome the trauma that they are left with - what about the rest of us???

Being alive during the Viet Nam war in the late 60s & early 70s, scenes like that were normal to see on the news every night.
@Pfuzylogic That was 10-20 years before my time - and it still doesn't make the practice okay, either.

After you see it hundreds of times as a child you get desensitized when every adult around you doesn’t respond.
I read today that the Taliban is hanging the people that helped the American soldiers.
How could this have been prevented? Staying indefinitely, using taxpayer money to pay for the Afghan government and it's military indefinitely?
How could the US prevent the Afghan military who were trained for 20 years and left with billions in military equipment from running and leaving all that equipment to the Taliban?

@Pitchblue

We should have sent Lorena Bobbitt to Afghanistan to teach Afghan women how to defend themselves against the Taliban.

WOMENS' RIGHTS. THAT should have been at the top of the list of our goals.
@beckyromero 20 years of training and the men ran away but surely the Women wouldn't run if they got the chance to cut off a penis.

It is what it is, and what it was always going to be. We should have never been there in the first place.

Where have I heard that before?

@beckyromero Sometimes it fits. One of the few honest things Trump said during his whole presidency.

Totally agree 👍🙄😔😥😢💔🙏🙏
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
It might have been preventable, but there was just too much intensity on getting out now. It also could have been a lot worse.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Said it many times we never should have been involved, even back in the 1970s. It was a trap.
closed4service · 22-25, F
This was a major fuck up. I just hope it doesn't end with the worst case scenario.
Pfuzylogic · M
bush 43 got us in there and super quiet now. Leaving is always ugly and if the afghani military capitulates, there are very few options left.
Pfuzylogic · M
@beckyromero
I am very aware of the posture of our country then considering I was an active CPO at the time.
@Pfuzylogic I guess that you forgot 9/11 already???

@HootyTheNightOwl
I am very aware of 9/11.

I'm not sure it could have been prevented...

As I believe the Russians and Americans have both spent decades there trying to change them and have failed.

Delayed sure, prevented? I don't think so, I think we could of been there another decade and things would stay the same.
Not only did Biden screw up the departure, he then doubles down and seems to have no compassion or empathy for the thousands of Afghani's who helped us and will be slaughtered by the Taliban.
Biden is just about as bad as Trump as President.

We shouldn't be over there killing people for no damn reason. The war was not winnable.
The policy of withdrawal is one of the few things I agreed with Trump on.
