Should people in prison have the right to vote?

JarJarBoom · 41-45, F
Can we really trust their judgement??
well to be fair we can’t really trust most people’s judgment whether they’re in prison or not only our own

No.They are excluded from society.

I'm even wondering if most people know what they are voting for... Ignorance and personal prejudice leaving people to go rampant with their choices is hardly a good thing.
Zoeoz · 26-30, F
@DallasCowboysFan I very much agree with you, except for the characterization of other people's views as stupid. Freedom of speech is sacrosanct :)
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@Zoeoz I did not mean that people's opinions are stupid if they disagree...just the ones that can't name their governor or the vice president or still believe the Earth is flat.

No. They forfeit that right to vote by not living by the laws of the land
Niburu · 51-55, M
For clarification for everyone, it is only felony prisoners that lose their voting rights. Misdemeanor prisoners do not lose them, they can vote from jail.
@Niburu That is good to clarify.

What about the "criminals" in society not in prison ?

If the idea of prisons is supposed to help people fit back into society and become responsible citizens then encouraging them to vote would be a positive step.
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
No, so long as they are incarcerated they shouldn't have that right. I do think they should have the right back after serving their sentence and any parole though. If we have deemed them to have served their debt to society, shouldn't they be afforded the rights that every other citizen has? (minus the right to bear arms for violent offenders of course)
Cannabro · 36-40, M
If they have proven themselves as good citizens by following the rules all the time and continue to do so after election is done so they can vote on the next one yes
Zoeoz · 26-30, F
@Cannabro Yeah yeah, for sure, I agree that their voting rights should be restored after they've done the time. But what about while they're still in prison?
Cannabro · 36-40, M
That’s up to the commitee to decide if an inmate is following protocols enough to have voting rights based on individual growth potential vs actual growth done @Zoeoz
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@Zoeoz Never. They should have considered that before they committed the crimes that got them in prison.

Besides, voting is absolutely the last thing a prisoner is thinking about.
Trying to get out early, better food, home, women, the next crime they are going to commit when they get out.......yeah. But voting.....no.
Ross19 · 31-35, M
No they shouldn't. Having a right to vote is part of your freedom and prisoners lost their freedom when they were sentenced.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@Ross19 I'm curious, because I seem to be in the minority, would you say that once a person has completed their prison sentence and they are released from jail, that their right to vote should be reinstated?
Ross19 · 31-35, M
@BlueMetalChick Once the punishment is done and they are released then sure the right to vote is reinstated
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@Ross19 That seems reasonable.
MaliaAgain · 36-40, F
I dont see why not if they are citizens of wherever there locked out. Most of the politicians we are voting on have committed more crimes
Pfuzylogic · M
There are people released outside of prison that just received their right to vote in Florida.

I think that is awesome once they paid their price.

@Darnya I asked if you think prostitution should be legal.

Not until they're released from prison. But then again we have waaaaaay too many people in jail for things they shouldn't be jailed for...

@TacoTuesday
You would have so much in common.
lever2000 · 46-50, M
@TacoTuesday I guess the other 1% are all Trump's buddies.
DunDunDun · 22-25, F
@TacoTuesday I highly doubt that 99% of criminals are both democrats and stupid
No, but I believe non lethal offenders who have payed their debt to society should have their voting rights reinstated.
Sorry I should have said - why ?
@Zoeoz No I am just wondering why - like for what purpose ? - they are in the lockup their rights are limited - so lets keep it that way. Actually lets reduce some of the rights the already have.
Zoeoz · 26-30, F
@MarmeeMarch Ohhh, I see. I generally try to be neutral in asking political questions on here. I genuinely want people of all political persuasions to reply, so I try not to skew the phrasing of the question to my own opinion of the issue. My own motivation for posting this question was something that Bernie Sanders said recently, so this topic may be in the news for the next few days :)
@Zoeoz Oh God bernie - I get a sick headache each time I think of that corpse 💆‍♂️
RobG22 · 51-55, M
No, they gave up that right when they committed their crime.
DunDunDun · 22-25, F
@RobG22 According to that logic no one should have the right to vote. We've all committed crimes. People in prison are just the ones who have gotten caught. Also people make mistakes and their opinions should still be valid.
LonelyMan · M
Yes- since illegals and dead people vote (of course, they only vote Democrat)!
SW-User
That's part of the punishment for being in prison, no voting rights.
Ramon67 · 61-69, M
No , they gave up the right when they were sent to prison
DunDunDun · 22-25, F
I think they should.
lever2000 · 46-50, M
Loretta78 · 46-50, F
Does incarceration mean losing one’s citizenship ? That’s part of what voting is about.
@Zoeoz That’s why I’m asking, do they lose their citizenship ? There have been cases in the past where inmates have been given the option of serving in the military for a lighter sentence.
Zoeoz · 26-30, F
@bijouxbroussard I would not say so. It's a question of whether their voting rights should be suspended while they're in prison, not whether they should be stripped of their citizenship.
@Zoeoz Then I would say no. Every citizen should be able to vote. And if they’re not losing their citizenship they shouldn’t lose their vote.
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
I think they should not want to vote, just like everybody else
MaliaAgain · 36-40, F
@ImRileyTheDog happy birthday
ImRileyTheDog · 22-25, F
@MaliaAgain Thanks
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
@ImRileyTheDog Because it's entirely useless, at least in my country. They will determine what's best for us regardless of our vote, plus the people are ruled by the large corporations and the billionairs anyways. Democracy is just a way to subdue the people by giving them the illusion they have a say in things.
