There should be a maximum voting age

just like there is a minimum age. why should someone over 70 that doesnt contribute anything to society still be allowed to vote... especially about topics that wont affect them anymore.
JustDoIt69 · 36-40, M
You’re the reason we should raise the minimum age.
SW-User
Someone over 70 like my parents payed over 45 years of income tax. I feel they are more than entightled in having a say in things.
@SW-User they had 45 years a chance to vote...
SW-User
@SquirrelGirl I said what I needed to say. Goodbye.

@BlueClapTrap they had for 5 decades a chance

@BlueClapTrap i agree actually
What is it that younger voters contribute that older ones don’t?
@DayDreaming2 for example being actually affected by certain laws have long lasting consequences
@SquirrelGirl My parents and all their friends are over 70yrs and I have to say they all talk about this countries future and what they think needs to be changed or kept. They vote for the future, not for today. Their votes might impact things that will outlast them , they worry about what they are leaving the next generations.
TheProphet · M
@SquirrelGirl Name those laws if you can.
Boy are you naive.You need to get off your high horse. Seniors worked their derrière off to get where they are (and for their kids) and have contributed more to society than you’ll ever know at your age...and still do. We didn’t sit around all day with our face in games and mooch off our parents. We actually searched and found ways to be productive in society and be contributors. We found our own jobs. We deserve much respect. We built America!
@LadyGrace yeah... you did a totally awesome job with this mess we have
Right. The mess this generation made of it! @SquirrelGirl

Because they put their lives into society.
@SW-User and for that they had 5 decades of voting rights and the chance to shape society how they like.. but at some point its enough
SW-User
@SquirrelGirl it’s enough when they’re dead.

Oh wow!! Holy sh!t!! I cannot believe that I just read this!?!? Surely you’re only joking?? Just trying to garner some attention by making trite, flippant, & asinine remarks like this? This is ABSOLUTELY THE STUPIDEST F$&KING COMMENT that I’ve ever had the dissatisfaction of reading on this site. Surely, you are just a troll? Just GOTTA BE. For the record, people over 70 have MORE than “paid their dues” to society. They’ve paid their share of taxes, for which now they should be able to reap the rewards. They have voted & been leaders themselves. Fought for our freedom on foreign shores. Made inventions that have revolutionized the world. Guess what? This internet by which we are now communicating?? Created by people who are now in their 70s. Too many inventions & technology to even comprehend was created by people that YOU find to be “obsolete”?? RIDICULOUS!! They’ve had gainful employment & reared children, who have now (OBVIOUSLY) reared simple minded twits, such as yourself!! By the way, exactly how old are you? 18? 19? And y’all WONDER why people hate “millennials”!?!? That is completely understandable. I did a bunch of dumb sh!t back in my day. However, disrespecting my elders was NEVER one of them. Because even my young bravado knew it’s limits, and I was always aware of the wisdom possessed by my elders. And on that note, I will leave you with something to consider before BLOCKING your STUPID @$$. (No, I am certainly NOT scared of debate with you or anyone else. However, I will NOT engage in a “war of wits” with you, when you obviously have 0 weapons. Your stupidity can NOT be alleviated, and you must continue to suffer from your brain wasting infirmity on your own. Continually attempting to educate a fool with no possibility of success insures that the teacher becomes a fool as well. And I’ll not be a part of that).

Nevertheless, the old saying is paraphrased as such: When you are a teenager & young adult, you THINK that you have all the ANSWERS. When you grow up & actually become an adult, you REALIZE that not only did you NOT have all the answers, you did NOT even know all the QUESTIONS!! I realize that makes absolutely NO sense to you NOW (as it didn’t to me either 30 years ago). But ONE DAY it will. And it is for THAT DAY and for THOSE REASONS that the people over 70 are VITAL to having a voice in our democracy. Good luck & Heaven help us!!

@RemovedUsername329422 18 and 19 year olds aren’t even millennials (youngest millennials are 23 now), you have your generations mixed up - and damn you got triggered 😂
FLMan232 · 61-69, M
What makes you think people over 70 dont contribute? If your issue is with people who don't contribute, what about someone who is 20 and doesn't contribute? What about people who not only don't contribute, but suck money/resources out of society?
JonathanC · 61-69, M
@FLMan232 Better a 90-year-old vote than such a clueless punk.
TheProphet · M
I think only white rich property owning men should vote. That eliminates the stupid twits that don't deserve to vote.
TheProphet · M
@Burnley123 Nope not a Troll. Thanks for playing.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Burnley123 Obviously, but so what?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@QuixoticSoul okey dokey.👍
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
They contribute understanding and wisdom, gained through many years of experience with many things. Many of them remember our country going through things similar to things that we're going through now, though of course some things are different now.

Oh, and one more thing. How old was Ronald Reagan when he took office, and how old was he when he left office? In my opinion, he's the last truly great president our country has had. Thanks in large part to his tax cuts, our country enjoyed a major economic boom during most of his presidency, and he also put a great deal of pressure on Russia to tear down the Berlin Wall, through his policy of peace through strength, which eventually resulted in the fall of the Iron Curtain.
JonathanC · 61-69, M
@TeresaRudolph71 Well, no, Reagan was shit.
MrK007 · 46-50, M
You could’ve just gotten a balloon instead of posting this. 😉

Spoken like someone without the wisdom of maturity.
ABCDEF7 · M
Medical science just know that it takes a certain age for brain to develop so that the person is mature enough to take mature decisions. But the opposite is not true, we can't say that the ability to take decision will expire at certain age. It can't be true for everyone.
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
@ABCDEF7 Yes, I think there's a process that everyone goes through, usually between the ages of 15 and 25, during which people learn who they are and how to live sensibly and develop sound reasoning abilities. And all too often, during this time, people end up learning a lot of things the hard way.

Insurance companies understand that people aren't fully mature at age 18. I've heard that car insurance rates generally go down for guys when they turn 25, if they've been driving for a few years and have a good driving record. And a person has to be at least 35 to become President, for the same reason.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
I think you are right, people over maybe 65 don't care about most of the issues, the same should apply to politicians, nobody over 60 should be eunning for any office because they don't usually care about the future and they don't want to
Cierzo · M
On the other side, I think the vote should count more as you get older. Elderly people are much less likely to get fooled by any snake-oil seller.
JonathanC · 61-69, M
@Cierzo Well, the current president belies that notion.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Cierzo This is actually demonstrably untrue - the elderly are far more likely to be victims of various scams. This is a serious and widespread concern. Something like three billion dollars a year are stolen from the elderly in various scams.

The elderly need their hands held when it comes to snake oil sellers, and their adult children need to track their spending, email, etc. Sucks, but that's where we are.
Cierzo · M
@QuixoticSoul I was actually trolling, this kind of posts do not deserve another answer.

However, I seriously think that parents should have an extra vote for each child until they reach age of majority.
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
Yes...I think up to 25 or over should vote. not Teenagers unlike....FUCKING CALIFORNIA >:(
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
@QuixoticSoul you're speaking of self conscience in a way that Education is important but now days is Fucked Up like Education don't matter for the future anymore unless you wanna pay google to put up a fake Background of Educations. These kids vote too but there are 18 to 23 year olds there who haves no clue what politics is. there haves been conservative asking questions to wannabe liberals at Universities. 97% failed to ask these questions.

anyways I'm a drop out from College that is against Liberal Values and shltty Education. I can still live and make money through my Hobbies instead. remember...College doesn't always pay your way through the future. I've seen a lot of Failures due to the lack of Teachers and its resources even in California.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@FreestyleArt To take over the university you need a PhD. And after you get said PhD, you have to survive an incredibly cutthroat and competitive environment fighting for one of the few available spots. So yeah, professors are smarter than you.

Sorry little one. But not only have our over 70's contributed more to this country than the 18 to 26 yo. They have made this country the great nation it is. You know, the so many want to come to for a better life.

As far as I'm concerned it always has and will always be their right to vote for as long as they live.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Mysti No, it's their fathers and grandfathers that did that. The boomers were the most selfish, useless, and destructive generation in the American history.

The 18-26 set hasn't had a lot of chances to contribute yet, but at least they will have to live with the consequences of their decisions.

Edit - people can't read your snarky reply if you block them, you know 🙄
Mysti · 51-55, F
Actually a majority of the over 70's are part of the silent generation. Not boomers. Just sayin
TheButterfly · 22-25, T
The right to vote is a basic human right, not a privilege given for the work someone does.

The OP sounds like she's about 12 years old.
JonathanC · 61-69, M
Complete crap.
xixgun · M
No. But I agree with some others that it should be raised a bit.
JonathanC · 61-69, M
@xixgun Fortunately, in order to protect us from people like the OP, ANY change in the voting age requires a constitutional amendment. Good luck with that! Bet the OP doesn't even realize it. I am old enough to remember when the amendment was finally passed lowering it to 18. It was a huge movement with tons of support. Nothing like it would happen in the near future now.
xixgun · M
@JonathanC I remember it too.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
well I think the voting age should be raised
BlueRain · F
Exactly!

i am ok with that.. but why stop there, might aswell just euthanize all people over 70.
Yes, you would, wouldn’t you. I just told a friend of mine that. You certainly would. Shows how evil this generation is. It also proves that ego is the anesthesia that deadens the pain of stupidity.
@AngelofFail
AngelofFail · 26-30, F
@LadyGrace you sound scared... shhhh... its over soon enough
Scared of the likes of you? Oh no. I know where I’m going and I know God protects me. I fear for nothing, but you should. You reap what you sow. You’ll see that in time. @AngelofFail
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
No, but some sort of cognitive function test might make sense.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@MarmeeMarch The slipperiest of all slopes 😂

But I agree, a basic mental acuity and memory test should be part of the general health check that candidates take before running for president, etc.

and where would the schools and colleges get their money if it were not for the old people

He still pays taxes. No taxation without representation.

[c=#008099]Well if 70 year olds don't contribute anything more to society as you say, would you object to the government returning the 40% of earned income they pay in direct taxation from their pension plans? After all, if they don't contribute anything but money to society, then why not give that tax money back to them if you consider their vote to be irrelevant?[/c]

@MarmeeMarch duh. They have paid into and earned that social security their entire working life. They deduct from your pay every week. Do you work? Have you ever noticed this deduction.
