Are Feminists Really About Female Empowerment...Or Are They Just Women In Power?

Graylight · 51-55, F
Feminism:
The advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.
The theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.

Though there's a range of agendas within feminist movement, just as there are with any platform, feminism is essentially guaranteeing the rights bestowed by the US Constitution. Equality across the board.

It might be expressed as power, such as a woman in public office, but it's more likely to be illustrated by a woman who earns the same pay for the same work.

Right. Which is why it's a failure....

@Pikachu Okay
@WoodyAq

Glad we finally made that clear👍

Not all feminists are women in power.

And those who are range from doing a social service to serving their own ends through the cause. Just like anti-feminists, they range from those who have grievances (rare) to those who just want something to blame and look down on. Even if it means demonizing it.

Most people who claim western feminism is useless ignore the fact that lot of the organizations are active in the East and Africa. And in men's rights.

If there was some acknowledgement for that, maybe we can start a productive discussion. Otherwise we're stuck with the pseudo-intellectual online version of feminism.

Feminism is not a monolithic movement, and it’s hard to characterize their views in one sentence. Some feminists are about female supremacy, they do exist - but they are the fringe.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I find it fascinating that you spend literally no time finding a feminist to talk to. Ask the question, and will receive "No we're actually about equality" from every single one.

And yet people still insist that they have some sort of agenda for women to actually take over the world and subjugate men.

If someone says something and you say "You're actually saying this" - it's insulting to everyone's intelligence.
WoodyAq · M
@CountScrofula Yeah, they say that it is always about equality ... but sometimes it isn't.
helenS · 36-40, F
Feminists fought for women's right to vote, for example. And for a woman's right to purchase a car without prior consent of her husband. I don't know whether that has much to do with "empowerment". From a male perspective, yes, maybe it has.

@WoodyAq Thank you - I get your point. I am not aware of "feminists" who fight for female supremacy.

@helenS Tumblr is chock full of them.
WoodyAq · M
@helenS Well, I wouldn't call it supremacy. Take gender out of it ... do you just want the full rights society has chosen to give people, or do you also want a say on how rights are developed in the future.

You should want both. But, I shouldn't object to you claiming your rights and should support you.

But I may, and should be allowed to, object to new rights you want to develop and propose my own.
Define "feminist". There's a lot of bandwidth there from first wave suffragists to third wave radical feminists to fourth wave #metoo to womanists to postfeminists.

As an example Marxist feminism would probably have some questions about the structure of "female power".
WoodyAq · M
It has changed from the former to the latter. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there has to be balance.

They're no longer relevant unless we're talking in Saudi areas.

Wrong.
Women in western countries have equality by law. They do not have it in practice.
The difference is important to learn.

They're on a little power trip right now. Not to worry, soon enough they'll be put in their place.

They are all complicated anyway
