Early Tomatoes, second tomato of the season

We have a tomato plant on our balcony, in full sun most of the day. We have now had two ripe tomatoes. Last year the tomatoes were small, like cherry tomatoes, this year a little larger. Unfortunately, I did not record what variety they are. They are firm and delicious, almost like mini beefsteaks.

nothing beats a fresh picked tomato with salt and pepper. mine still have a long way to go. maybe early august before it's picking time

@saragoodtimes It has and I don't quite understand. It was a mild Winter!
@Oster1 we're now under a drought watch here. haven't had enough rain since last summer

The variety Patio is great for growing in a container and produces small cherry tomatoes. I have about 20 fruits and flowers on mine. I grow Abe Lincoln for uniform two to three inch tomatoes because it reliably produces year after year. Berkeley Tie Die is a beefsteak type that is streaked with different colors. It has a very complex taste because each streak has a slightly different taste. I also grow Roma and San Marzano tomatoes for paste and drying. I have about 20 plants of 10 different varieties that I grow every year. Old favorites like those mentioned above, plus some new ones every year to see how they do.
Wow. Homegrown tomatoes are the best. Last year I grew some sunburst tomatoes and they were deliciously sweet. I'd like to try growing an heirloom variety next. 🍅

I grew a Compari tomato plant in a big pot in my living room window. I got two tomatoes about the size of marbles.

Delicious!

I've not planted tomatoes this year but often have some growing in compost-bags on my little "patio". A watering-timer keeps them alive.

As well as the flavour of the fruit itself, I love the smell of tomato plants!

@ArishMell I find the odor "odd." There is nothing like the taste of a good, ripe tomato. I like to eat them as if they are apples. Did you know that they are in the same botanical family as "deadly nightshade?"
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@samueltyler2 I don't know what the smell is. I think some of it might be acetone, which ripening apples evolve.

Oh, yes, I've often just picked one off the vine to eat it straight off!

Yes, I am fairly sure I've read previously about the tomato's deadly cousin! Isn't botany wonderful?

What ever they are they sure do look good. I would go buy me a pack of bacon and pig in 😋😋😋😋.

@Kygirl they really are delicious.

Wow Sam,
You really do have nice 🍅's. I love tomatoes. We have six plants out, they're starting to bloom and we have a few little ones already.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Kygirl I guess the ones I chose are definitely early varieties.
It’s funny, just yesterday I was thinking about fried green tomatoes, which my mother made for me as a child. I haven’t had them in years. Every time I think about preparing them… it’s a bit labor intensive; chopping them up, egg wash, flour, seasoned cornmeal, rémoulade…
Have you ever tasted them ? 🍅
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@bijouxbroussard I love them. Every visit to the southern states and I OD on them.
