How important is the warranty on a Laptop?

Mines just expired and sent all this info on how important it is, 'just in case'. and then freezes when I tried to extend the warranty. Which I was of two minds of spending $83 on anyway... I probably don't need it as my Internet security is up to date...

Two separate topics. The warranty covers hardware, and the internet security TRIES to protect you from malicious software attacks.

I have multiple MackBook Pros, and Apple's warranty is worth having, because they have a fantastic support program.

You should look very carefully at the details, because most companies farm it out to third parties and that's not going to help you if you run into a problem.

I've always built my own and always used open source operating systems. I hate Windows, Apple and Google products.

I made the switch over back when When Windows 95 was still king nd Windows was 98 was just realesed and the Apple IMac G3 was coming to the scene

My frist modification was an old Gateway Computer

@HumanEarth impressive skills!!!

@Mindful It comes from that I like being in control and doing what I want to do and being at the mercy of technology giant.

Just look at Windows, Apple and Google today. You have to jump though hoops if you don't agree to terms and if you do - your screwed. Mostly on privacy rights and what software you can use. Using strictly open source stuff, you have real freedom to pick and choose what software you and devices you want.

It's really boils down to - what are willing to give up. It's privacy vs freedom of everything else.

The big technology corporation want your data and don't care about you personality.

To a point.

A lot of third-party software is written to run only on certain OS, normally Windows later than "WIN -x".

That's not because the manufacturers all support Microsoft especially, but because they know most private and commercial users are trapped in the MS monopoly. So they don't write editions for MS' rivals.

You might be able to use some such applications on Linux, etc. but I think this needs special adaptor-software and a lot of OS-manipulating skill, and functions such as on-line manuals and support systems might not work.

I do not like Microsoft's business methods at all, but as an ordinary user rather than IT specialist, I have no choice if I want to use the non-MS programmes I have bought.

Yes and no. After 3 or 5 year's at time's u are better off buying new. It would have cost more to fix then buying new

I once had to return a laptop within 15 days due to malfunction

Very much. If any component gets damaged, they will replace. But 3 years warranty is enough. Usually defective components will malfunction within first 3 years.

@OriginalDumbMan I've only had it for 12 months.. I'll try to extend it again.
for someone who worked for Gateway and Radio Shack, you can..But.. Are you tech savvy? IF you are..then no..If your not.. Save it
