My smart phone reads my mind!

My watch died few weeks ago so I decided to get a new battery.
I didn’t say out loud I was only thinking about it.

I just googled where to, not even finished my question and yet I could read - where to get a watch battery near me appeared in first suggested line.

I was stunned and I didn’t like that.
It’s like big brother!

It's alarming or annoying, but not strange.

Google analyses what you write faster you can type it, and by also using information amassed about you (including URL?) by much of your Internet and (if you have one) "smart"-'phone use, it is very quick to recognise what you were asking for.

I have found looking for anything on-line now usually releases a flood of advertising links, of which very few are the slightest bit relevant to the subject!

That's probably by crude text-matching though, because I do not use the Internet in ways easy for MS, Google, Amazon et al to trace me. I do not use Internet banking; I limit my other financial on-line use to the minimum; my on-line shopping is rare, irregular and not likely to interest Californian advertising-agencies.

I also refuse to use Facebook and Twitter, and refuse to own a so-called "smart"-'phone or an eavesdropper like Alexa; which is eerily parallel to the "telescreen" in the 1930s-written novel you cite.

When I do take my basic portable telephone with me, I leave it switched off so making tracing harder. In fact I leave it at home more often than not!

(Any telephone, fixed or portable, does need its system know where it is electronically, otherwise it would not work.)

@ArishMell I guess I have to more alert about the things I used to take it for granted. Thank you for the info I never thought about much before. 😊

@ArishMell Good thinking. My wife tells me her smartphone informs her where she has been all week, all her trips... she doesn’t mind... it gives me the heeby-jeebies
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@WalterF I'd certainly not want that. It's not what it tells me that counts, but having no idea who else it is telling, and why.

It’s like big brother!

It is big brother.

I've watched it happen plenty of times while my Bluetooth is on for my playlist. Make one mentioning about needing to go to Lowe's and an email from them advertising a discount shows up. That's just one of many instances.

These inventions weren't created for our own benefit alone. It's downright frightening, but they've made us dependent on technology for so many things.

@MoonlightLullaby sometimes I’m wondering about how humanity might change its basic form in the future.
@Eyeinthesky Look how much humanity has already changed and over such a short expanse of time. It's really sad and I don't see it a lot of it changing for the better. There's too much indoctrination and false believe out there. You may be speaking of the human form changing to something of whole different anatomy, but I don't think much about that stuff. It seems to be a little too much imo, but I don't judge people's views on it.😉

@MoonlightLullaby let us look more optimistic though, look at my age. How many reached that 100 years ago?

Anything with the world smart in front is bad for us.

So I’m guessing they watch our every move, it’ll let them know everything, so they know who to keep an eye on.
Key words etc.

@Eyeinthesky do people tell you that you look like her?
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@samueltyler2 No. 😊
But my husband and I liked to watch the middle, she was funny in that show.
Normally my husband doesn’t watch sitcom but their height difference was like ours. He’s 6’3 and I’m like 5’0….And I’m the joker in the family like Frankie.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Eyeinthesky that is so hilarious. My wife is 5'2" and had to give a trophy to a professional basketball player, 7'3", she barely made it to his chest.
It's not just listening... 👀😳
@UnderLockDown Damn cameras🧐
@MoonlightLullaby Not just cameras, they can map your house using your wifi signal like radar.
@UnderLockDown Oh I know all about their tricks.

Frightening

Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
If it bothers you, you need an Iphone and use duck duck go for a search engine.
Eyeinthesky · 56-60, F
@Subsumedpat I’m using iPhone and I’m afraid there’s no safe search engine out there.

@Eyeinthesky How does he define "independent" and "mainstream", in his world?
No, it’s big Corporations. Brother has been relegated to history’s trash bin. It’s being called a NWO or facsimile.
Sad to say Re: smartphones/ watches, smart etc., without them many would be lost, left behind. The proverbial ” double edged sword”.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@soar2newhighs Good point, although I don't understand the two colloquialisms. Big corporations, and very few of them; and with far too much influence and control.

They are pushing us ever more to working and living as they want for their benefit though camouflaged by disingenuous claims like "now we all....". Nevertheless, it is still possible to live without being slaves to little boxes of electronics. The trick is see the gadgets as tools we use in our lives to our advantage; not to warp our lives to fit them.
@ArishMell What was a “ mom & pop” shop morphed into a big box store, and the individual creator, entrepreneur morphed into the corporate giant.
Old phrase, “ buyer beware”. We have to break out of the “ zombie” if you will, just follow along. We need to e er use many induct strengths and means of getting through each day.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@soar2newhighs All the big companies started in a small way; but it is still rather up to us how much we encourage them. The difficulties start when they become near-monopolies, like Microsoft and Amazon.

You could say it's...watching you
