Do you scold your cats when they catch mice and birds?

Oneofthestormboys · 100+, M
It’s really sad, but they’ve evolved to do this over millions of years - scolding makes absolutely no sense to a cat, and you’ll just make it afraid of you.
I save loads of small animals from my cats whenever I can though, because I’m a total softie.

They are feral. I have found a dead frog, feathers and a butterfly wing on the doormat this past week.

@4meAndyou no this was a little female cat, the one that has testicles. I thought I told you about her. She is loud like a siren when she wants something. The neighbors can hear her squall she’s that loud. Rhubarb is being a butthead lately. I think some lady (or maybe two) around here feed and pamper Rhubarb on their days off…won’t come around from one day to sometimes 3 days and when Rhubarb finally shows up comes with a nasty attitude towards me growling like a threat that I better not try to keep him for myself. But still wants food.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti Okay...that's the Rhubarb we know and love...I didn't know a female cat was coming around, too! That's pretty cool!

My cats are pets. They are indoors and don’t catch things outside.
@Keepitsimple Amy is an indoor cat too. if she catches a mouse I'm suing the exterminator

The neighbor's cat does, she scolds him. But they're pets, not prey to him--that he sets free and forgets in the house.

We always try to stop him.

My cat is an indoor cat. Letting them out doesn't make sense to me.
Lilymoon · F
@Pretzel Exactly!! ... makes no sense to let them out

@chrisCA Yup... and much healthier
chrisCA · M
@Lilymoon It is sad seeing a lost cat post on Facebook, knowing that they where probably hit by a car, or killed by a coyote.
Lilymoon · F
@chrisCA I know... I hate seeing those. Makes me sad. 😣
No. I had a feral kitten, that I ended up raising. Fed him well and took good care of him, but he was wired as a hunter. Birds, mice, rats, squirrels... Never felt like I should try an alter instinctive behavior.

@BizSuitStacy OK, so you are a sarcastic git. Got it.

Why scold what is simply natural instinct, cats are predators, if you're letting your cat out, put a collar on it with a bell, give the mice and birds a chance! 🐱

no. animals are just acting out of instinct and dont know better. It would be cruel to scold them for that

@Funnycat I love that video! Thank you
Pretzel · 61-69, M
nope.
it's in their nature
might as well try to teach a pig to tap dance
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Pretzel It's more fun to teach a pig to sing "Piggy wiggy wiggy wiggy woo".

no my cat she is an house cat but i let her out some days. she watches the birds but makes no real attempt to stalk them.we had a mouse in the house behind a tall unit . jess kept going to it as if she knew it was there . one day she caught and killed it was a shame but we could not tell her off as that is nature and what cats do. they are natural hunter / predators where there big cousins a lion on a savannah or to our domestic moggy [stormychan]

They dont go outside.
Too many predators that will eat them.
chrisCA · M
@Adrift True. We have to worry about coyotes.
Adrift · 61-69, F
@chrisCA we have those and great horned owls. I even found someones dead rooster dropped in a weird area while out on a walk in the neighborhood.
chrisCA · M
No. That is their nature.
Besides, our cats are always indoors.

I've always kept them away from them; indoor cats.. I did love when my cat would chatter with his lips, vibrate his whole body, when birdies would land 3' away and he could have torn the screen to get at them, but he chose to imagine he couldn't.

I wouldn't for a mouse bc that's pest control

For birds, that never happens as they are never allowed outside

Just rescued another mouse this morning. Just gently took it off her and put it into a little hamster cage to recover. I’ll let it go later on the Heath.

Not when I had a cat. It was an indoor cat, so no access to birds. And interestingly, mice stayed away all the years there was a cat in residence.
