Forgive me if I sound like a blazing idiot...
But, I still don't get how the main feed is set up. I see some posts 2 min ago, then next one says 52 mins ago, and then 25 mins. Ago. And what is the flame emoji for??

The main feed has been completely screwed since admin introduced the "Customise Feed" facility.
They will not address users concerns, and the majority of users dislike the new system.
Even the Post order/Sorted By facility is useless. I have mine set at "Time Posted" but still get those huge gaps in posts.
Admin has made this place not as enjoyable as it used to be.

The flame is what the algorithm believes is hot according to what it thinks you like as well as what it thinks is popular.
This is actually what the admin are trying to promote.
The different times is also a result of their desires even if it's on the regular feed. It's caused by not slowing all the posts. Therefore making it look like it's a hot post.
Posts that are not popular are always moved down the feed list so adjusting the feed settings does little good.
Three different sort algorithms conflict with each other. 🤷🏻♂️

And moving unpopular post down
Sort by time posted is given the least priority.
People have both blocked or muted you and their likes are also figured into the greater algorithm.
This is where "reputation" comes into the feed equation. Reputation has always been a factor in the feed order.
Reputation and popularity just will never be the same things.
BTW there's no setting on reputation. And they really don't want to advertise it. Yet it's in the TOS.

There is no rhyme or reason to it. Well, technically there is. The oversimplified explanation is that they have an automated system that thinks it knows what you want to see better than you yourself knows.
Any feed customization setting you make are treated as suggestions at best, and if their system feels like it they'll override parts of it to show things they think you should see and hide things they think you don't want to see. So yeah, you are also missing out on posts.
Nothing any of us can do about it. A lot of us are dissatisfied with it and want an option to have an old style feed (show everything in chronological order), but they've just waved us off.
As for the flame, I believe that one shows "hot"/"popular"/"top" posts. The exact details of what qualifies a post as such is still fuzzy.
