Is it insulting?

I've always been called "hard-working" at work, but never been called smart. In fact, a professor actually said jokingly that I tend to not use my brains. And implied that I'm not very bright.
I wonder then if being hardworking makes it a joke if I'm not smart enough.

It happens to me all the time
They call me donkey, bar light etc and I just try to not take their words seriously
But I feel bad
I think I should improve myself
But there's a limit to everything
None of us are perfect
But there should be a barrier tht none should cross
And some people will criticize you no matter what
Sometimes I feel they're just intentionally targetting me
Sometimes I think they're concerned about me
But no they don't help me to correct myself all the time
They just like to criticize
I'm sorry
I think everyone of us are smart differently
no need to undermine
I hope you'll feel better
And even so don't take such insults seriously 🙇‍♀️

Working hard is being smart. Being smart doesn't mean you will be good.

@JimboSaturn you are right
@JimboSaturn A side note, almost nothing to do with the conversation, I prefer working smart. With a little quick learning, I now run industrial printing presses which take a fair amount of mechanical aptitude, I have no interest in mechanics, but think more in terms of physics.... actually translatable to how ink/water mix to create a colour... and it just becomes intuitive, where you feel how to create a colour, this little stripe of water, this ink form resting quickly against this roller, becomes a language of its own...

In this language, being smart and intuitive may mean you will do good, but when you pick up things that many take years trying to pick in matters of weeks, doesn't mean they will see you favourably.

@thewindupbirdchronicles That's true work smart not neccessarily hard!

I am a college mathematics professor.

I remember, years ago, two of our graduating seniors were applying to graduate school. As I recall, they actually decided to go to the same one.

One of my colleagues was talking to me about the letters of recommendation we were writing. He said that he thought Student A was much stronger mathematically then Student B, but if he had to place money on which one would successfully complete a PhD in mathematics, it was Student B.

And he was write. Student A was bright but undisciplined. Student B was disciplined and hard-working.

And that is not an insult. Student A dropped out of grad school. Student B is now a mathematics professor.

I think it depends who says it. From the professor it was clearly an insult. But I know many including me who complement people by saying they are a hard worker. To me it means you care about your job and you take responsibility and are ambitious and not afraid of challenges.

I always wondered the same because I was called hard-working by various people. I somehow find it as unintentional backhanded compliment.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@samueltyler2 Because working smart is better. Saves your time and energy.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@CrazyMusicLover but working hard is really a compliment, no one wants to be called the opposite. How have you been, we haven't chatted in a while.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@samueltyler2 I've been okay. Thanks for asking.
Luke73 · 22-25, M
Not using your brain is something different than being not bright though
Pretzel · 61-69, M
nope it is a compliment to your staying power
Imsleepy · 31-35
It could be insulting, for sure. Do you want to be seen as smart?
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
@Imsleepy no but I don't want to be seen as stupid either. I just want people to be indifferent to my brains.
Applepiedom · 56-60, M
Work smarter not harder
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Applepiedom why are the mutually exclusive?
Applepiedom · 56-60, M
@samueltyler2 if you work smarter you get best of both or work you ass off for same results. Doesn't matter to me anymore

No a hard worker don't give up. Even if there not doing it right. I take it as a compliment😄
