Is it insulting?

I've always been called "hard-working" at work, but never been called smart. In fact, a professor actually said jokingly that I tend to not use my brains. And implied that I'm not very bright.
I wonder then if being hardworking makes it a joke if I'm not smart enough.

I always wondered the same because I was called hard-working by various people. I somehow find it as unintentional backhanded compliment.

@CrazyMusicLover why backhanded? I guess it depends on context.

@samueltyler2 Because working smart is better. Saves your time and energy.

@CrazyMusicLover but working hard is really a compliment, no one wants to be called the opposite. How have you been, we haven't chatted in a while.

@samueltyler2 I've been okay. Thanks for asking.
