This is NGC 3972.
It鈥檚 65 million light-years from us, which means that this is a photo of what it looked like when dinosaurs were roaming the Earth, yet that鈥檚 the most recent image we can hope to get, of course.

@newjaninev2 Mind blowing!!.... thank you for that..

Whenever I look at Andromeda through my telescope, I wonder whether some being on a planet up there is looking at the Milky Way and wondering whether someone like me is looking at Andromeda.
Yes, I know the light from Andromeda left there eons ago, but that doesn't matter. The two of us could be simultaneously seeing the distant pass, and yet still be pondering the possibility of having a "partner" across the void today.

The Andromeda Galaxy and our own Milky Way Galaxy will collide in around 4.5 billion years. Of course, it鈥檚 unlikely that any of the one trillion stars in the Andromeda Galaxy and the 300 billion stars in our galaxy will actually hit each other... the distances between all those stars is too great.
newjaninev2 路 56-60, F
@Lilymoon We use terms like 4 million light-years and we kind of think we comprehend the distance referred to, but of course we don鈥檛.
Our evolutionary history is centred on metres, kilometres, etc... our immediate surroundings

@newjaninev2 But it would change the dark sky to something more interesting, then something bright, etc.
And, as you no doubt know, you don't have to have collisions to have orbits gravitationally destabilized...

they've discovered lots of mega earth type planets in our own milky way Galaxy , can't wait for the James webb telescope to get out there and report back
newjaninev2 路 56-60, F
@FurryFace The James Webb is scheduled to be in orbit by the end of this year, yes?

FurryFace 路 61-69, M
if only we could get there
@FurryFace Oh yes. He knows our every thought and why we believe certain things. And even though we goof up at times, He still loves us. He understands we're not perfect. He doesn't love us because of what we do, or do not, do. He loves us because he is God and he created us, calling us his crown creation. I'm just thankful that salvation is not dependent on our performance. It is God's grace that saves us, through faith. Not of works, lest anyone should boast they saved themselves. Not possible.

It swamps human comprehension to realise that if you were travelling at 300,000 kilometres per second it would take you 2陆 million years to get there... and that鈥檚 the nearest galaxy to our own galaxy
Lilymoon 路 F
@newjaninev2 Yeah it's literally astronomical. beyond human comprehension

I agree! Whenever I am stressed or feeling anxious, I just think of how tiny and insignificant I am. A speck within a speck of dust...just here for a short ride. :)
And wow...amazing image!!

It's right near Cassiopeia.
