A parent complained about the book it came from and questioned its appropriateness for little kids.
The school board reviewed, decided that it should be removed from the younger kids section and moved to the middle school and above section.
It wasn't banned, just restricted to older children.
So a parent had the ability to question the appropriateness of certain material, get it reviewed by the school and get it restricted to an older crowd.
If a parent in Florida WANTS their kids to read this, they still can, it is available to the public.
Not sure how this is bad for Americans. Sounds to me like parents and citizens are finally getting the ability to question and remove some material being taught in public schools...sounds like choice and freedom to me.
Why does this upset you?

@SumKindaMunster if the concerns are legitimate, then i don't dismiss them. I have no children from my womb, but do have "stepkids" and grandchildren. One i helped raise. Took him to a pride event when he was ten. He is a fine young man. The queerness he was surrounded by simply did not rub off. Imagine that, will you?
This is not a legitimate concern.
A child would have to purposefully go to the adult clothing and seek out such items. Like they do condoms, or a variety of other adult items. These exaggerated rages are not to protect children. They are to minimize and alienate an small section of the poplualtion.
And being exposed is not the same as teaching.
Teaching is explaining what they are being exposed to.
And whether you, or any parent, don't want their kids exposed to real people, with real lives, living them in a manner that does not affect them in any way, then keep them locked up with only books that you approve of, no tv and no internet.
And instead of teaching them about diversity and the good things that come from it, keep them blinded until they reach adulthood. Let's see how that works out.

@Carla
And who decides if the concerns are "legitimate"...you?
Not sure why you insist on these little purity tests. I have told you I am not personally bothered by queer people and don't harbor any issues with them. I take what you tell me at face value, why do I not get the same courtesy from you?
I don't disagree. But where we part ways is I think you should behave better than those you have a problem with, and you don't. I see the same attitude, condescending, biased, angry, hectoring, hateful and petty. You've allowed yourself to believe you are surrounded by enemies and guess what? Perception is reality. I ask you to tell me how bad it is for you, and you have one story about some bigots who made a snide comment behind your back in the grocery store. This bothers you? Why? Shouldn't you feel bad for these people, then forget about it and move on with your day?
I think the issue is both the age appropriateness and the values of the parents. My understanding is that some parents believe some issues should be saved for kids until they are older, some it is a value judgement. The laws being passed in Florida would seem to at least partially address these concerns.
Why is this so important for elementary age kids? Is it really necessary they are taught about homosexuality and transgenderism at such early age? And if so, why?

Looked it up as it was unknown to me. Astonished that any human being looked upon as being a future Leader, even a President, should seek to ban such sentiments from being expressed in elementary schools.

@Carla yep back to the cotton field immediately.

Yeah I know. Apparently it only takes one complaint from one parent to get a book removed throughout the entire state.
And the parent misattributed the poem to Oprah. Not that it made a difference. At the end of the day, Gorman is Black, and that can't be allowed in DeSantis's schoolrooms.

@SW-User Does the name Clarence Thomas ring a bell?

@sunsporter1649 Not interested in your deflection. Just ask me about the hookers in Moscow and we'll leave it at that.

@SW-User Ya mean it's up to the individual in his pursuit of happiness, not the racist bullschiff you left-wing nut-job marxists spew forth at every waking moment?
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
That is really so blatantly racist, and politically motivated to show DeSantis will make racism totally not only legitimate but legally binding if he is elected President.

@BackyardShaman i hear Portugal is nice.....

@BackyardShaman If the Dems sit on their lazy asses and allow that bastard to be elected President expect full-blown Jim Crow to be implemented, if not outright chattel slavery.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
@Diotrephes definitely, I don’t think he has the votes, but, I also thought the morning Trump got elected I was watching a Sat Night live re-run . So I don’t always know.

It's always like that when one conservative complains.
So?
Was we a different sort a country ever?

The parent who requested the restriction was later revealed to have links to the Proud Boys[44], a North American far-right neo-fascist organization that promotes and engages in political violence.
That tells me all I need to know.

@LordShadowfire i didn't take the time to dig deep. But i imagine most of these people screaming about certain books and particular people have ties to these whack-job bigoted groups.
Isn't it just peachy having our young people's minds directed by terrorists?
