Did you know that Ukraine was a country before it entered Donald Trump's vocabulary?

Did you know where it was on the map?

Most people think Ukraine is a political / news topic as we tend to do to human lives. Believe it or not, people were born and lived there before it was talked about in the political sphere.

Just like Syria, Iran, etc. etc.

But they're just political pawns to us.

I will regret posting this because I know some dumbass will have some confidently incorrect and dehumanizing thing to say, and four other idiots will be dumb enough to upvote it.

No matter what you say, you're talking about innocent men, women and children. That's on you.

I'm confused what Trump has to do with this...

But yeah, I generally knew about Ukraine being there, but I didn't know a thing about it...

In college there was a professor and student, I can't remember which is which, but one from Russia and one from Ukraine, both within an hour of the boarder.

Yep. Someone in my family has a dad who is Ukrainian descent. And I’ve always been good at geography, so double yes.

I have been to Kiev twice in the last 30 years. I have friends there now that spend a lot of time in air raid shelters.
Putin is not my favorite human.
I have lived in a diaspora neighborhood for 15 years and know that none of the simplistic sports teams approach to this that you see on this site is educated or informed.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I'm not sure what exactly that means but I think it's bad. I'm sorry.
@SinlessOnslaught Well for one the west likes to pretend Ukraine is a cultural, ethnic and, political monolith that supports American and NATO colonization of eastern Europe and support the far right "ultra nationalist" forces that effectively run the country.

Or the rewriting of Ukrainian history to make the OUN-B and the Waffen SS the real heroes of the Eastern Front in WW2.

You also have the descendants of the OUN-B fascist terrorists who were given safe haven in Canada and the USA who are behind the rewrite of history and white washing fascism in Ukraine and the very people who reconstituted the OUN-B, Right Sector, and the Azov movement since 1991.

I mean shit the Ukrainian Canadian Congress that is being treated as the voice of Ukraine in Canada was founded by an OUN-B fascist militant.

Canada and the US have the bizarre distinction of being the country that both the victims and perpetrators of fascism in Ukraine fled to after WW2.

And for a man who claims to be Jewish Zelensky has made the bizarre choice to push through decrees forcing Ukrainian Orthodox believers to either continue to practice as they have for centuries and be suspected of collaboration or recognize a schismatic church the Patriarch of Constantinople himself called heretics a few years ago and switch calendars making them Eastern Catholics in everything but name as a show of loyalty to the state.

I am sure it is just a coincidence that Ukrainian fascism came out of the Catholic territories in the west that was actually part of Poland 80 years ago.

Based on this alone it seems that Zelensky is trying to create even more sectarian tensions to make the country ungovernable if he loses power.

Then you have Hungarian Ukrainians who see Victor Orban as the only person looking out for them and well Romanian Ukrainians don't seem to have anyone in their corner.

To be honest alot of this feels like Yugoslavia 30 years ago. You still have people who think Serbs are bad even though they still have no idea what a Serb is.

The truth is nobody in western governments have the best interests of Ukrainians at heart anymore than they cared about whether girls could go to school in Afghanistan.

Yes, sure. I think Zelensky is being forced to make a lot of concessions to Putin in the name of peace.

Even before it was absorbed into the USSR. Even before Hitler tried to absorb it into the Third Reich. There was history before what is trending on social media at the moment.
@dancingtongue Before that it was part of the Russian Empire.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Before that the Mongols.

Ukraine country profile - BBC News
Ukraine's history as a nation emerged from Kievan Rus' (8th-13th centuries), fragmented under Lithuania, Poland, and the Russian Empire, saw brief independence (1917-1920) after the Russian Revolution, became the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union (1922-1991) enduring famine (Holodomor) and war, and finally achieved full independence in 1991, transitioning to democracy but facing ongoing conflict, particularly Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
Early Roots & Fragmentation
Kievan Rus' (9th-13th Centuries): The East Slavic state centered in Kyiv, considered the cradle of Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian identity, was a powerful medieval entity.
Mongol Invasions & Foreign Rule (13th-17th Centuries): After the Mongol conquest, Ukrainian lands were absorbed by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland, forming the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Cossack Era & Russian Domination
Cossack Hetmanate (17th Century): Ukrainian Cossacks established a semi-autonomous state, the Zaporizhian Host, rebelling against Polish rule.
Treaty of Pereyaslav (1654): Cossacks pledged allegiance to the Russian Tsar, leading to increasing Russian control.
Russian Empire Annexation (Late 18th Century): Through partitions of Poland and annexation of Crimea, most of Ukraine fell under Russian rule.
Struggle for Identity & Soviet Era
Ukrainian Revival (18th-19th Centuries): A distinct Ukrainian national consciousness grew, influenced by European nationalism.
Ukrainian People's Republic (1917-1920): Brief independence was declared after the Russian Revolution but was crushed by the Bolsheviks.
Ukrainian SSR (1922-1991): Ukraine became a founding republic of the USSR, suffering devastating man-made famines (Holodomor) and immense destruction in World War II.
Independence & Modern Conflicts
Independence (1991): As the USSR dissolved, Ukraine overwhelmingly voted for independence, becoming a sovereign nation.
Orange Revolution (2004-2005): Mass protests led to pro-Western reforms.
Euromaidan Revolution & Russian Aggression (2014): Ousting a pro-Russian president triggered Russia's annexation of Crimea and the start of war in the Donbas.
Full-Scale Invasion (2022): Russia launched a full-scale invasion, which Ukraine has fiercely resisted, leading to ongoing war and a deep national identity forged in resistance.

Believe it or not, people were born and lived there before it was talked about in the political sphere.

This sounds fake.
Elessar · 31-35, M
@BohoBabe It was all orchestrated by Obama and Biden!!111!!!11!
Elessar · 31-35, M
Ukraine was a country before both Russia and America started getting drawn on the map too
@Elessar Maybe we just stay away from the historical pretexts currently being used to make blood and soil justications?

That should not be controversial.
Elessar · 31-35, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow As I said, literally everything can be used to make "blood and soil justifications", that's a poor excuse for auto-censorship.

Anyone who knew anything about WWII, anyone who knew anything about the fall of the USSR and the movement of atomic weapons, anyone who knew about Chernobyl, all knew about Ukraine.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@samueltyler2 But that's very few people. 🤷‍♀
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@sarabee1995 It appears you are correct.

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I knew where it was on the map when I was less than 10 years old.
