Where were you when the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up?

It exploded January 28, 1986

I was 17 at the time I was in science class and watching

I was in a job interview when the receptionist rushed in with the news. We desperately tried to get a TV with signal in the office going but all we could get was the audio. Funny how connected you feel to complete strangers when sharing a harrowing event. And no, I did not get the job.
3Dogmatic · 46-50, M
I was in school. I remember it well because we had a teacher who was in the running for the spot that Kristen McCauliff got.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I was 17 as well. I assume I was at school, but I can't remember the details.
calicuz · 56-60, M
I think I heard about it at school, but didn't see until I got home and watched the news.

Coming out of a final exam in high school in suburban Chicago. The Bears had won the Super Bowl two days earlier so that whole week stands out in my mind.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I was six and not really aware of what was going on tbh. It's not a formative memory or anything.
twiigss · M
@CountScrofula I was a few years older than you and yeah, it's not something I remember.
fun4us2b · M
I was at work - we all kind of stood up at our desks and were listening to the news playing on the overhead speakers that normally played oldies radio...
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
I was 6. I was just home from school, I remember watching it on the news on a little black and white portable tv in the kitchen.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Watching it on TV, if I remember correctly.

I was in shop class
@NativePortlander1970 It was a shocking tragedy. That day was seared into my memory.
@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays I saw it live in the school library running an errand for my English teacher, the librarian had the tv on CNN and asked me to watch the countdown and launch with her, it was surreal.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays I remember the mission control saying "obviously a major malfunction "

@specman That's the thing with BS conspiracy theories; no one can come up with a rationale as to "why".
SJones48 · 41-45, M
I was 3 and was mad because they interrupted the Price is Right for news coverage
FreestyleArt · 36-40, M

In a bar in fort lee having lunch
My father was 13 years old in Norway and throwing balloons filled with water out his science class window to the parking lot below evidently, so I wasn't even on anyone's radar yet.

It was a hoax, they are still alive, we’ve never been to space.
