The gilded age. When , as trump told you, tarrifs

were a most beautiful thing. Back in the gilded age. Late eighteen hundreds, early nineteen. He tauted the amazing wealth of the time. He told you he would like to bring on his own "golden age."
And you bought it.
Do you know how average people lived during the Gilded Age?
The glitz was a facade. The wealthy lived the backs of the oppressed. Look it up.

This is what you voted for. This is what you get.

Like I said it took 4 years to mess things up this bad,
Sorry, but the facts don't agree with you. NOT AT ALL!!

For the first time in literally GENERATIONS, real wages are growing for the lower quintile of US workers. And they're growing FASTER under Biden than they did under Obama or Trump. For the first time in GENERATIONS, the lower half of workers are sharing in our economic growth!

There are more than 5,000,000 (FIVE MILLION) more people employed now than during the peak under Trump. Just read the graph.

And the number unemployed is historically low!

Inflation? The pandemic deflation was followed by worldwide inflation; that is now gone.
@CorvusBlackthorne Your welcome, if it makes you feel better all for it.

@Sojournersoul I do, in fact, feel better. I always do when the other fellow resorts to personal insults. It means he has lost.
@CorvusBlackthorne good for you. You have a great day.

I admire your optimism. They. Don’t. Care. Millions of people in this country support actions by members of one party that would outrage them if done by members of the other. We’ve already got one state that passed a bill making it illegal to vote against a trump agenda. Inertia is picking up speed, and they love the fear and oppression while they themselves don’t feel it. I’ve lost all hope and compassion for them. You’re doing better than I am, Carla. 🙏

@JustNik Sheer hypocrisy! In the course of it all, the system of checks and balances is being gradually eroded.
What I voted for was safer borders and the economy. Going to take more than a week to fix was was broke the last four years.
@Sojournersoul says
Going to take more than a week
(1) Trump promised lower prices on DAY 1.
(2) Tariffs don't lower prices, they RAISE them.
(3) Canada & Mexico are our TWO largest trading partners.

“When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one,” Trump continued. “We will drill, baby, drill,” he said, referring to increasing domestic oil production. “That’s going to bring down prices of everything.”

Those few doll hairs the working class regularly falls short each month was collected in tax. Tariffs promote domestic production a sector that has shrunk enormously in the last 30 years here in the US'A. Win's across the board in this inflation driven economy of current.

Tariffs worked when trade was largely local or national at best. Only specialty or luxury goods were imports and there was no local alternative to french Perfume or Ivory.. Now it is commodities that are imported and whole industries have offshored to remain competitive. Tariffs cannot be used as a protective measure any more in most cases. And the common argument applies. They only hurt the country that imposes the tariff..So the only legitimate reason to apply a tariff is as a defacto consumption tax..😷
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@whowasthatmaskedman In the U.S. tariffs also flourished during its early years because it was the largest source of funding for the Federal government. There was no income tax; and property, sales, and poll taxes were the provinces of local and state governments. So it was the primary revenue stream for the Federal government in addition to being a way to protect the nascent industrialization of the nation and creating a new, separate and rebellious culture and identity. Trump may see it as a way to "starve the beast" viz a viz cutting taxes but is overlooking the fact that times have changed and we are a consumer nation now, and the MAGA crowd may turn on him when the prices go up or the shelves go empty at their local Walmart.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Carla Of course trade happened. But the first machinary and produced items came from the old world (Like steam engines and locomotices) were imported whole or in parts and assmbled, while raw materials went back in exchamge. Only later did people from Europe set up shop to build the machines.. At that point teriffs became useful to encourage industry growth..😷
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@dancingtongue Indeed. "Taxation without representation" was all about a tariff tax on imported tea..😷
Wait till Trump's tariffs trigger inflation. You will see disenchantment settle in. You can't feed a family with Trump's tough talk.
@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays It's AMAZING, the swill tens of millions of Americans swallowed!

History repeating itself.

Apparently a trade war with China wasn’t enough for him.

Now he wants one with all his trade partners. Apparently pissing off the last of your friends is the way forward.

*TARIFFS.

And the gilded age actually was from the late 1870s to the 1890s.

Carry on.

@Carla

What each of us posted shows that it started in the 1870s, NOT the 1890s as you stated.
Carla · 61-69, F
@RedBaron it did. My error. The point i was making is that the era we are discussing was not good for the average people.
And potus wishes a repeat.
Looks like those Tariffs are working great. None imposed, Mexico and Canada sending personnel to the borders.

yes, somebody chose his words carefully for him...
MethDozer · M
The highest level of political corruption in US history, child labor, company coin, company stores, company towns, the Haymaker Affair where they bombed the workers, Carnage and Frick using snipers and machine guns on striking workers until the State Militia arrived for state funded assassination attempts on a union rep, the Chinese Exclusion act, the Crédit Mobilier scandle..... All this and more from the exciting pilfering minds of the parasitic Robber Barons
