What's the earliest historical event in your memory?

In 2006 when Pluto was demoted to.. not a planet? I'm not sure if it was labeled a dwarf planet right then or later
Piper · 61-69, F
The assassination of President John F. Kennedy. There was an announcement that school was closing early, and it was quietest school bus ride I'd experienced, except for some quiet sobbing from our driver. I was 7.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Birth. I was rereading my diary. Day 1, still tired from the move.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@MasterLee I think if we all remember our births, we'd be traumatized
elafina · 36-40, F
Pluto will always be a planet in my heart 🥺
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@elafina mine too. It's got enough mass to make itself a sphere shape. Good enough for me
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@elafina Same here.
The assassination of President Lincoln. I remember the night of the show that Lincoln and his wife attended at Ford's Theater, Our American Cousin, was broadcast on TV. I remember the gunshots then everybody in the audience went crazy. It was a real panic in the theater. Never saw anything like that on TV before. I never forgot that. Then I switched to CNN and Wolfe Blister to get the whole behind-the-scenes story. I videotaped the whole thing. Wonder what happened to that tape? 🇺🇸
@independentone No idea. I wonder what happened to my Civil War VHS tape?
@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays I kinda remember those, they were the top loading ones, right?
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I remember people talking about Sputnik and the Soviets, but didn't really get the meaning of it all.
Musicman · 61-69, M
President Kennedy's funeral. I was only two.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Musicman I guess you've got a strong memory
Musicman · 61-69, M
@caPnAhab I do. I remember sitting on the family room floor in front of the couch with my parents. The lights were off. I really didn't understand what was going on, but they were sad.
SevIsPamprinYouAlways · 56-60, F
Richard Nixon resigning the presidency in August of ‘74. I was 7.
Probably when I was in elementary school, and the teachers were talking to us about Desert Storm. I don’t remember specifics of what they said, but one kid started crying. I think his dad was military. Teachers freaking kids out over the news.
trollslayer · 46-50, M
Mt St Helens, probably. Actually, remember NYE 1979. I was 4. Also blizzard of 77, i was 2.

Edit, i would have been less than 2 in 1977. Trauma memory - just one image i remember.
@trollslayer I always thought they should have dug a big pit and swept all the ash in it, then made it a park and named it Washington's ash hole
Adrift · 61-69, F
The first that I can remember that I actually paid attention too was probably the first walk on the moon.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Adrift Came home from a Roundup Club rodeo just in time to watch.
eli1601 · 70-79, M
First American in space - 1961, I think
JFK’s assassination. I remember my mother telling me what had happened and watching the news on tv.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@bijouxbroussard sad day in history
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
The 1976 bicentennial.
@Harmonium1923 My high school graduation class was 1976. At the last senior party someone put this song on:

JSul3 · 70-79
The trial of Adolph Eichmann in '61.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
JFK assassination
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I saw the aftermath of Croatian war in 1998. Damaged buildings with scattered holes from the bullets in their walls. Three years ago I saw a video where a guy showed walls just like that which means some of them still weren't repaired to this day.
Allelse · 36-40, M
Gulf war being on every bloody tv channel, genocide in eastern Europe, genocide in Rwanda and Boris Yeltzen dancing.
@Allelse
Boris Yeltzen dancing.
With a bottle of vodka in his hand? 🤣
Allelse · 36-40, M
@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays Haha! I don't think so, he was in a white suit shirt and suit pants dancing with a huge grin on his face.
jackson55 · M
When we landed on the moon in 1969.
jackson55 · M
@22Michelle Yep, with my home made rocket.
22Michelle · 61-69, T
@jackson55 was it for the cheese?
jackson55 · M
@22Michelle Just an afternoon outing.
Akimbo75 · 46-50, F
Challenger explosion in 1986, watched in school on a tv wheeled into the classroom.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Akimbo75 We had a clip of it on a VHS cassette when we were small and my brother liked to watch it.
One two three -jfk rfk and MLK.
Then we shot the moon with a rocket with men inside.
Ontheroad · M
For me it was the Cuban Missile Crisis.
22Michelle · 61-69, T
Kennedy (JFK) assassination.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
I would say the Vietnam war.

First moon landing 1969
DDonde · 31-35, M
The new millenium. Y2K
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@DDonde how'd that make you feel as a kid? Being barely four years old, I have no memory of y2k
DDonde · 31-35, M
@caPnAhab As a kid I knew about the Y2K bug thing but nobody was really worried or concerned about it that I was aware of. Then again, I was just a kid so my view of things was limited. But I remember being excited about the new millennium thing being a cool historical event getting to see.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@DDonde Ignorance is bliss, they say. But that's what made being a kid so great.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
Gulf War. I remember hearing on the radio that we were at war.
Probably something to do with rebels. Like a lot of gen xers, I first heard the word from Star Wars, and they were the good guys. When I was hearing about this un-good-guy behaviour from the news I found myself asking my mother "are rebels good guys or bad guys?"
NinaTina · 26-30, F
Is that where Bard is from?
The fall of Saigon, on my fifth birthday in 1975
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@NativePortlander1970 Did it mean much to you then?
