do sun beds actually make u look older?

i usually fake tan but when it starts to wash off it looks so dirty. i also hate the process of using self tanner. i want to start going to the sun beds maybe a few times a week to get a tan but i’m scared to look 40 by the time i’m 30.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
Yes it will make you look older. All the heavy tanners my age have fine wrinkles at my age now.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@Flenflyys that’s sad
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@hollyyoung yea. If you put effort into your skincare now you can have great skin into your 50s
accidentprone · 26-30, M
Then just drink a lot of beer, and it will preserve you so you will stay younger looking.
I look 15 years younger than I am.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@accidentprone and i’m done with this convo don’t know how my post turned into this
accidentprone · 26-30, M
@hollyyoung Well it did, but I know you are wanting to run away from it, but it will always stick in the back of your mind. I hope one day it will consume you and take you over, and then you will know what I have been trying to tell you.

Sun beds can make you look DEAD! The incidence of melanoma from the use of sun beds is quite high.
deadgerbil · 26-30
Yes. It ages your skin as the UV rays damage your skin. There's no benefits to tanning
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@deadgerbil i know it ages ur skin over time, but how long does it actually take for the damage to show?
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
Women I know who used them regularly when they were young have skin like leather now.
itsok · 31-35, F
If you’re gonna tan, and all you’re concerned about it the aging, cover your face up. You can fake than that. If you’ve noticed fake tan comes off sooo much more quickly on the face. Or use a skin tint/foundation
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@itsok You seem to know quite a bit about this. 🤔 Why are you not informing us?
itsok · 31-35, F
@Degbeme what do you wanna know, deg?
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@itsok Well with you being me and me being you, I thought we didn`t keep any secrets. 🤭

Tanning beds also cause high incidents of skin cancer. Don't use them.
Magenta · F
Agreed. I've never used one but everyone I know/see who does, their skin looks dried out and aged.
Magenta · F
@NoGamesTolerated I've heard the same, using hats and such to avoid the sun so as not to damage their skin.
I spent far too much time sunbathing when I was much younger, yikes. Now I wear a visor or hat when I'm out for an extended time. 😁
Magenta · F
@cherokeepatti @hollyyoung Natural pale skin is lovely and so so much healthier. 🌷
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@NoGamesTolerated ohh yeah i’ve heard that too actually
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
From the UK government

Sunbeds emit ultraviolet radiation, which can cause tanning and sunburn. There is no evidence to suggest any type of sunbed is less harmful than natural sun exposure. UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and World Health Organization (WHO) discourages the use of sunbeds for cosmetic tanning.

If you are aged 18 years and over and wish to use a sunbed, ask for a guidance on the use and limit your use of the sunbed – don’t have repeated sessions to build up a quick tan before a summer holiday. If you have very fair skin, burn easily in the sun or have had skin cancer, don’t use a sunbed.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@MrAverage1965 doesn’t seem worth it
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
@hollyyoung If you are going to use one build the tan up gradually
@MrAverage1965 yep.. sun ages one as well.
Filipinalez · 18-21, F
If you do it within limits Id say no but if you're there long enough to look like you came from the surface of the sun that's a different matter.
Filipinalez · 18-21, F
@hollyyoung As many dont like when you wear a sunscreem I wouldnt go for longer than 15 mins a week or do something like zoomtan where it's not as lethal.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@Filipinalez would going 15 mins a week still give u a tan tho?
Filipinalez · 18-21, F
@hollyyoung I would think so I have friends that look pretty good with it.
Pretzel · 61-69, M
the UV rays have their effect

you can see it on people that go to the beach all the time - without sunscreen

and the effect is has on people living in higher elevations
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Creates free radical damage in the skin. If the user also smokes and drinks there is an accumulative effect making it much worse. I worked with a young woman who took pride in her dark tan, she smoked and drank. She also started aging rapidly in her 40’s. So much for vanity.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@hollyyoung Your liver has to deal with all of this. Even tanning. That’s a huge stress on it.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@cherokeepatti why do people go to tanning beds then if they know all this? that’s crazy
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@hollyyoung VANITY ! College coeds would start their tanning January in order to get a tan before they went on Spring Break to beaches somewhere. It happened every year.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
If you smoke or drink while tanning that will just multiply the aging effect so keep that in mind. And probably a lot of junk food will add to it as well. I worked with a woman younger than me and she prided herself on having a dark tan…she got her naturally though. By the time she was 45 she had aged badly, looked older than me. She had smoked and drank quite a bit too.
Tanning beds? Oh be sure they will!
Yes.

You are exposing yourself to UV radiation, which ages the skin and is a setup for skin cancer.

Have you seen There's Something About Mary? There's an older character who looks like a used baseball glove made of tobacco.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@SomeMichGuy never heard of it but surely if you use them in moderation it can’t be that bad
@hollyyoung The Greeks were right about normal things.

When tiny bits of something will kill you (Plutonium, for instance), it's hard to take/use it in moderation.

UV rays do CUMULATIVE damage over time...
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@HoraceGreenley I have wondered if she has had skin cancer incidents
accidentprone · 26-30, M
Just go to the beach once a week or spend an hour or so out in the sun in your bikini.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@accidentprone i like in scotland what is sun?
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
live*
accidentprone · 26-30, M
Then move to Florida
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@accidentprone ok packing my bags the now thanks
accidentprone · 26-30, M
@hollyyoung I got a spare bed for you and as much beer as you would want to drink.
Convivial · 26-30, F
A good way to get melanoma...
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
It can be taken to extremes, just like anything else.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@fanuc2013 I know
accidentprone · 26-30, M
well, I guess the answer to the question is something natural.
If you lay in them too long
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
Yes it just takes a while
SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
Enjoy your liver spots
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@SkeetSkeet No thanks i’ve already decided against it
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Getting a tan however you choose to do it makes you look older. Plus there's the risk of skin cancer.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@LordShadowfire and not really self tanning doesn’t make u look older, it’s just annoying.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@hollyyoung Sure. What do I know?
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@LordShadowfire so are u saying even the mousse tan ages ur skin
Yes. I have an older stepsister that loved them, now her skin looks like she's a crocodile.
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@NativePortlander1970 not worth it is it
@hollyyoung You may look good tanned now, but decades of regular use destroyed her skin. No, it's not worth it.

hollyyoung · 18-21, F
@BlueGreenGrey i agree but my freckles come out when i’m tanned and that’s the only reason i wanted to go but obviously not worth it
hollyyoung · 18-21, F
