Cover versions that are BETTER than the originals?

I'll start us off with the greatest. This Sound of Silence cover by Disturbed. David Draiman's voice......WOW[media=https://youtu.be/u9Dg-g7t2l4]
Entwistle · 56-60, M
Jimi Hendrix version of All Along The Watchtower is the greatest cover version ever.
@Entwistle Hendrix is ok, but he never got as good as Clapton or George Harrison, Jimi was nothing but noise IMHO.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@Entwistle 💯 👍
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@NativePortlander1970 You are of course allowed to be wrong.
I'll throw another one in: Everyone forgets Nothing Compares 2 U is actually a cover of an older Prince song.

@Mesthartiya I totally agree!

The original version of "Unchained Melody" was sung in 1955 by Todd Duncan for the movie. Just think how many better covers have been made since then.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@supersnipe I used to live next door to a guy who collects old vinyl singles and he had several versions of "Unchained Melody" including the Righteous Brothers version, and I think he mentioned Les Baxter and Al Hibbler, plus a guy called Jimmy something (Jimmy Young, I think it was).
supersnipe · 61-69, M
@Crazychick Yes it was. He (Jimmy Young) got to No.1 with it in 1955 and it was one of several UK hits for him in the mid-1950s. He went on to be a disc jockey, presenting on the BBC for several decades.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@supersnipe 1955 was before either of my parents were born.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
I think that's a million times worse than the original. At least the original was listenable.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@NativePortlander1970 I wouldn't go mad over Simon and Garfunkel myself, but I can understand other people liking them. I can't say that about Disturbed though.
@Crazychick They ruined it
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@NativePortlander1970 From what I've heard of Disturbed they are awful.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
To each their own, but I'm not a fan of covers that essentially just slow down the song so the singer can get really close to the mike and sound "haunting."

That is not better. It's very different. You like it better but it's not better.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Africa by Weezer
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@MrBrownstone Ugh! I can't stand Weezer. They were one of the worst bands around in the 90s.

Crazychick · 36-40, F
@NativePortlander1970 Weird Al Yankovic? I don't mind him, he's quite funny sometimes. No matter how funny he is he cannot make Weezer listenable.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Mama Kin by Guns’N’Roses.
The entire Commitments soundtrack
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
Blue Moon by the Marcels
kodiac · 22-25, M
Maybe not better but considering his age pretty damn good[media=https://youtu.be/iituk_oA4MM] the original [media=https://youtu.be/VI57QHL6ge0]
@kodiac This guy is a prodigy
kodiac · 22-25, M
@Mesthartiya Absolutely! I added the original to show how good he is
Crazychick · 36-40, F
Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" is better than Dolly Parton's.
[media=https://youtu.be/3JWTaaS7LdU]
[media=https://youtu.be/lKsQR72HY0s]
@Crazychick Heathen, Dolly wrote it to symbolize her early singing career duet partnership with Porter Wagoner, to her it was her heart and soul to him, Whitney just sang it for a part in a mediocre film, nothing actually heartfelt.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Crazychick I love Whitney's take to death, but I love Dolly's version too(she also wrote it, which many people don't know). The other thing I don't like is how WH's version helped to popularize, essentially, yelling instead of singing, which many singers post-Whitney seemed to embrace. So did the dumbass public. There's so much more to expressing oneself than bellowing like a stuck pig. We're still dealing with the fallout through Olivia and Chappell, though I like them both and they are excellent with a huge range.

Manfred Mann’s version of the Springsteen song, Blinded By The Light
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@RockerDad Manfred Mann should be jailed for such a terrible cover of a great Springsteen song.
Johnny Cash doing hurt, Harriet Wheeler doing 'wild horses'... Almost anything Johnny Cash did as a cover, tbh
Entwistle · 56-60, M
The Monkees,Pleasant Valley Sunday. It's better than songwriters Goffin/King original.

MARTHA VELEZ's cover of BOB DYLAN's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry"... [media=https://youtu.be/kbR25OPugAE?si=vMHH_GTRNaCrcH2a]

LESLIE WEST's cover of BOB DYLAN's "This Wheel's on Fire"... [media=https://youtu.be/1wZYUBYFVdg?si=5YI1ROsS60jEcpxD]
When I saw this post, I suddenly thought about Disturbed sound of silence. That version was epic. The piano music or keyboard music was weirdly eerie.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Gingerbreadspice Why do I keep seeing people mentioning that one?
@Crazychick Who knows.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Gingerbreadspice All I know is that it's awful in the extreme.
GeniUs · 56-60, M
I seem to remember somebody posting this before, was it you?
BTW I disagree but if you want me to give an alternative I'd say Saxon's cover of Ride Like the Wind is one of the best covers ever.
@GeniUs Not me, no :P I'll listen to Ride like the Wind :)
