I wonder who Carly Simon was singing about

Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” was released in the US on November 8th 1972
Was it Mick Jagger? Cat Stevens? Warren Beatty? Kris Kristofferson? Her ex-husband, James Taylor?
I have read repeatedly that it was Warren Beatty.
@PoetryNEmotion I've read that as well. Like, she finally said in an interview 20 years later it was about him.

Carly was very smart in as much as she was ambiguous as to who the song was referring to.
Remember, at one point, Carly said she was singing about a composite of many men she had known, but later claimed that the song was about openly gay record producer David Geffen.

As smart as Bobby Gentry when she left everyone hanging as to the reason Billy Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge.

Over 5 decades later we are all still debating these great songs.
Thanks for the explanation @Gusman 👍

Why did Carly Simon sing about Warren Beatty?
The 70-year-old singer told People magazine that she's “confirmed that the second verse is Warren,” one of her ex-lovers in the 1970s. She added that Beatty “thinks the whole thing is about him” – though after years of speculation linking him to the song, that is perhaps not much of a surprise.Nov 19, 2015

Funny thing is that she sings, “You probably think this song is about you,” and it actually is about him!

John Olinger?
RedBaron · M
@hunkalove Definitely not. Who is he anyway?
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@RedBaron A living god. And a living goddess when he's wearing his pink taffeta prom dress!
RedBaron · M
@hunkalove That doesn’t answer my question.

What is he known for other than being a disembodied name on this website?

The fact she says "I bet you think this song is about you," makes anyone feel it may be in reference to themselves. Tricky..

Someone came up with the name David Geffen some years later.

Yes, I remember this one too!
I can't answer you but I remember it in the charts and it was a great hit
Didn’t someone actually pay Simon to find out whom?

ArtieKat · M
Warren Beatty or Cat Stevens, I believe, were the favourites. James Taylor came quite a bit later

Warren Beatty, maybe David Geffen and one other guy. Definitely not about James Taylor.
TAReturns · M
Several sources claim Warren Beatty as the answer
