I love horror movies... Here are 2 you probably haven't seen. They're mostly heavy commentaries on existential dread, and if you're not dead inside at least one of these should hurt you on a personal level.
Plague Dogs (This is an animated movie where some of the more graphic scenes were cut from the R-Rated theatrical release. It's a film that will hurt to watch)
Last Summer (This is a subtler movie, but well worth the watch. It's a coming of age story, but with a darker underbelly)
I would advise watching Wish Upon when you're done with these. It's a movie that seems to intentionally do everything right in a horror movie, but feels so wrong. It's not scary, but it is an interesting masterclass in horror production/classic horror tropes, that simultaneously throws the baby out with the bathwater. I would say it's on par with Slither.

@SnailTeeth I've seen Plague Dogs. It's an excellent movie. I haven't seen the others, though. I'll add them to my list.

For me it's a toss-up between:
The Thing
The VVitch
Hereditary
Suspiria
The Exorcist

@DearAmbellina2113 Black Phillip of The Witch is my favorite animal actor of all time. He had me scared of goats for a while. 😄

it depends on what you like in horror, in a movie when people are severed with a chainsaw with blood splashing everywhere, I find that boring, the same with zombie.
I really like the D@bbe movies, I have only watched the 4th and the 5th because they were available.
There are Asian and Indonesian horror I like such as the 3rd eye, Incantation, the Kuntilanak or May he devil take you.

Really enjoyed Midsommar!
I also enjoy the classics like Psycho or Rear Window.
Some of my favorites are probably Hereditary, Lovely Molly and Horror in the Highlands. Sinister I found pretty entertaining because kids are so creepy. Another good one is Incident in Ghostland!

The shining and hereditary are the best ever. So many layers.
I honestly found midsommar excellent art wise buttttt (subjective opinion) it reeked of pretentiousness. Idk.

@assemblingaknob I agree. In regard to art and cinematography, Ari Aster doesn't hold a candle to Alejandro González Iñárritu.

I'm not sure about the greatest ever but Hereditary, by the same director as Midsommar was great. They do horror the right way.
PhilDeep · 51-55, M
Too many sub-genres to choose just one though I am quite partial to The Shining and the original Halloween. And Alien.

Bride of Frankenstein. Watch the 1931 Frankenstein, then Bride, back to back for story continuity.

Recently seen - The platform.
A psychological thriller but wouldn’t say it was the greatest

If it has Florence Pugh, I gotta watch it. I like her acting.
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
Probably still The Exorcist.
Most horror movies are severely let down by bad acting and or cheap/cliche jump scares.
I never watched Midsommar.

@FeetAreFantastic Please, go watch it! You won't regret it.
