Tier ranking: Historical epics & war movies

A Bridge Too Far was fairly accurate account of Operation Market Garden. Was it great? No, but if you had a "good" category, I'd put it there.

Dunkirk was sometimes hard to follow because it kept switching days and nights. But it certainly did a good job in showing the precarious situation of the BEF. What it did poorly was in showing HOW that happened and WHY it was so important to rescue as many of those troops as possible. I'd mark it as adequate.

The Longest Day should be in the great category. I understand their is a colorized version out there someplace. Maybe it's because it's usually aired in B/W that people don't rank it higher.

Seen most of those in the splendid category and agree with those I've seen that you put there.

In the great category there were way too many inaccuracies to rate Pearl Harbor as great. I'd rate somewhere between bad and adequate - and only because of the battle scenes. Midway should be splendid (and the earlier version great).

So many I could add. I'm going to have to set aside some time to make my own list, too. all your fault! 😜

Based off some of these rankings I'm kind of surprised you don't have Gladiator II up in the Splendid section.
Just finished king and conquer.
The only thing historically accurate about was : a guy named harald and a guy named William met in 1066 and had the battle of Hastings… the rest was hot cock
@CedricH not really

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I‘m not really a fan of serialization anyway. I prefer films to series/shows, especially when it comes to historical epics.
@CedricH i think there should be laws when making films based on historic events.

death penalty for poetic licence and nonsense

No Lawrence of Arabia?

Hold on now! A Bridge to Far and Saving Private Ryan were pretty good.

@3Dogmatic Both movies are are actually included
Most of these films are dramatizations with sketchy accuracy.
CedricH · 22-25, M
@NativePortlander1970 Says who? I‘m inclined to give a director some leeway so he may take advantage of his creative freedom to dramatize.
@CedricH Says historians
CedricH · 22-25, M
@NativePortlander1970 So what? I‘m not asking historians for their opinions about a movie. Their validation isn’t necessary. I‘m interested in their thoughts on actual historical analyses or documentaries. Historical epics combine historical or legendary events with dramatization, that’s what the whole genre is about. If historians prefer to watch something more tedious instead of seeing history come alive in splendor and grandeur, then they can watch something else.

Saving private Ryan????😂😂😂 it was a masterpiece
SpectralMourning · 41-45, M
@Ferise1 I feel the same about Master & Commander.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@SpectralMourning ugh boring
CedricH · 22-25, M
@Ferise1 Exactly. It’s tedious and monotonous.
