Loved Newton as the occasionally over-physical Christian in ANDROCLES AND THE LION.

Newton: Wonderfully OTT by modern standards.

I always admired a British actor who I first saw on TV in the 60s: Patrick Troughton played many contrasting parts: Paul of Tarsus, Quilp in The Old Curiosity Shop, a crotchety school master in Dr Finlay's Casebook then the eponymous Dr Who. I was very young to have noticed something like 'range' in an actor, but I still remember it. Probably not well known outside the UK.

@FreddieUK Troughton was my first Doctor Who, I'm not quite old enough to have seen William Hartnell. Happy memories!
@FreddieUK Patrick Troughton was my favorite Doctor of the classics. I also remember him as Duke of Norfolk in The Six Wives of Henry VIII. I remember he passed away relatively young, while on a project here in the U.S.

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy...I was ( and always will be) a big Trekkie. Imagine that last sentence in Spock's voice...😅

Bette Davis, I still do

@Bignakedguy

An undeniable force onscreen - impossible to ignore. 👏
As a little kid it was the monster actors.
Karloff, Lugosi, Price, Lee, Cushing...
@dirge

The only thing I noticed but didn't like was his seemingly always having to be the most manly - almost cartoonishly manly - guy all the time. James Stewart, Dean Martin, Robert Mitchum and others had to play second fiddle.
@rinkydinkydoink i dunno that i really noticed at the time... or i was young enough to just accept that as the way. im not sure you're ready for much nuance in stories before 3rd grade
@dirge

Nuance be damned! You're right... that's what struck me about Newton as Long John Silver.

Robin Williams
@Lostpoet

That man could communicate with the child in all of us, imho.
Lostpoet · M
@rinkydinkydoink I really think he's my generations actor 1990's
We also watched a lot of John Candy
@Lostpoet

Both are great choices. The first SCTV installment I ever saw had John Candy cast as Beaver Cleaver in an updated Leave It to Beaver where he shoots and kills Eddie Haskell LOL.

Errol Flynn
@ChipmunkErnie

When onscreen, he owned it. That's for sure.

Richard Pryor
@AngelUnforgiven

No one like him... no one anywhere close. The funniest stand-up comic ever to appear on Ed Sullivan, too.
