Amazon.com Inc said on Saturday that its pricey "Lord of the Rings" prequel series was watched by more than 25 million viewers around the world on its first day, a record debut for a Prime Video series.
The company released the first two episodes of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" on its streaming service in more than 240 countries and territories on Friday. Amazon did not say whether the viewers it counted had watched all or part of the first and second episodes.
Future "Rings of Power" installments will be launched weekly until the Oct. 14 season finale. The series takes place in J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional Middle-earth at a time known as the Second Age, a period 4,000 years before the events in the "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" novels and films.
Amazon plans to let the full story unfold in 50 hours over five seasons.
The online retailer spent more than $465 million producing the show's first season, which was filmed in New Zealand, making it among the most expensive TV series ever
-------
I wonder if this will encourage more people to become members of Amazon Prime or if it will encourage others to re-subscribe. $465 MN for one season is a lottttt.

Apparently, some people didn't like it ......
----------
The big-budget series debuted its first two episodes September 2, with an Amazon source telling The Hollywood Reporter that reviews are being held for 72 hours to weed out trolls — and not of the hulking J.R.R. Tolkien variety, though possibly as witless.
“The Rings of Power” currently has a 34 percent average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to an 87 percent critics score. As of print, there are zero reviews for the series on Prime Video with users unable to post.
----------
IMDb, which Amazon also owns, has not suspended audience ratings for “Rings of Power.” Currently, the series stands at a 6.1 average score out of 10.
I did not know that Amazon owns IMDB. I wonder what else they own that I/We don't know about.

@DallasCowboysFan they are pretty desperate for a home run produced in house. wish they would have picked up sandman instead of flix.

@stound I wonder how much of the decision was based on economics and how much was impacted by what Jeff Bezos wanted.
@DallasCowboysFan im guessing mostly a jb thing. Apparently hes a Tolkien fan.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
I guess if I'm still alive I'll see it in another 20 years. Not worth all the other **** to pay for just that on some streaming service and waste bandwidth.

@DallasCowboysFan It's not just the data. It's actually everything all together. I would also have to get a different TV. Nor do I have a computer, so forth and so on. My income is extremely limited as well. What I can't afford, I simply don't use.
This cellphone of mine costs me nothing, data included. And antenna TV costs me nothing. Which it always has.
Call me a minimalist, yet I find everything of the latest is specifically designed to drain everyone's income. Which I simply don't have to begin with. 🤷🏻♂️
BTW do you understand just how much data just one movie is? You would only see one half of any movie at 2 gigs on a HDTV. So your better off buying a DVD. And that DVD includes surround sound which I actually do have. Very old though.

@DeWayfarer I have a cell phone plan with T Mobile ....the 50 and over plan.....fifty dollars a month, taxes included, unlimited data.......but I still only use about 2gb a month.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@DallasCowboysFan it doesn't matter what kind of phone plan you have if your TV doesn't get hooked up to the internet in some way.
I'm not going to buy one! I can't afford to!
Once again... I pay NOTHING! That's $0.0 per month.
I won't embarrass you by how much data I can get. Nor by how much I actually use. It's well over 2 gigs per month without a streaming, for pay, service. And that's without Google's update app data, because that's all turned off. Google play is totally disabled on my cellphone. And so is the YouTube app.

The trailer looks amazing. Is it like a prequel to lord of the rings
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@smileylovesgaming Yes I think it is. Just like Star Wars. They started in the middle, worked backwards and then jumped forward.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@DallasCowboysFan sounds like the up coming Ahsoka TV show in Star wars is going to change things. Especially with the sequel movie's. They got a remake of movie 9 that is going to have these change sences. So now we are finally going to move forward after movie 6.
Jungleman · M
woke trash and an insult to Tolkien himself.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Jungleman How did I know the racist would weigh in on the subject?
Allelse · 36-40, M
But but you see there weren't any black elves, so I cant watch such blasphemy.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Allelse Okay, apparently you're not being facetious. So I'll summarize what the article says. Tolkien never intended for elves to be a homogeneous race. They have, shall we say, varying levels of melanin.
Allelse · 36-40, M
@LordShadowfire Hahahaha!! I'm just fucking with you, I don't actually care, the Elves are beyond any petty human nonsense of race, I mean in the Silmarillian the elves are distinguished amongst themselves in ways we'll never understand. Like those who were lucky enough to see the light of the twin trees or have been to Aman and so forth. They can have Chinese actors for all I care, as long as they do a good job at acting.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Allelse Oh, thank goddess, lol. You were very convincing.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
Once it's all out, I'll watch it.
Luckely my cable provider hosts this show from Netflix for free (well, I still pay the subscription from the cable provider). HURAY 🐣 ... So I don't need to go on the high seas this time... YARRRRR 🌊⛵🏴☠️

Almost finished the first episode, taking a break. A bit slow moving so far, but they're setting up the premise. Looks like it might be entertaining, unlike that WHEEL OF TIME series.
justanothername · 51-55, M
Actually initial budget was 1.5 Billion NZ over 10 years.
The post production was done in a facility near Auckland NZ.

I am still waiting on the new AVATAR sequel to release in December.
If it is as good as the original movie, it will be excellent.
