I didn’t think cartoons had a continuity as a kid. There was a Tom and Jerry cartoon that took place in the French Revolution where Tom is guillotined at the end.

Jerry is talking about how he tried to help Tom. My thought was, "What about the constant fighting? Since when have they been friends?"
If it had been a typical episode, Jerry would have been trying to make things even worse for the already-struggling Tom when he was trying to win over that female cat.
