Are you familiar with the term "Two spirit" gender identity in Native American culture?

revenant · F
There is a Navajo elderly guy on youtube who would disagree with you.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@LordShadowfire you could have told the security guard, we weren't planning on sacrificing that many people!

@Peaceandnamaste Alright, so one can conclude that your views are different to that on wiki for example at this moment : "Two Spirit" was not intended to be interchangeable with "LGBT Native American" or "Gay Indian"; rather, it was created in English (and then translated into Ojibwe), to serve as a pan-Indian unifier: to be used for general audiences instead of the traditional terms in Indigenous languages for what are diverse, culturally-specific ceremonial and social roles, that can vary widely (if and when they exist at all) ("A Spirit of Belonging, Inside and Out". The New York Times. 8 Oct 2006. Retrieved 28 July 2016). Just wondering when something from the past is something completely the same as something really first used in 1990. Thank you :-)

@val70 well said.
From what I learnt Natives always thought that the soul had no gender anyway but at the time of reincarnation it had to choose either one of the genders for most people.
val70 · 51-55
Although two-spirit implies indeed to some a spiritual nature, that one holds the spirit of two, both male and female, I've read that First Nations peoples view this as a western concept

@LordShadowfire Good, English is my fourth langauge, I have dyslexia, and it's your cultural war. Have a good life :-) do try reading more!
@val70 It's not a dyslexic thing. All you people misuse the word woke to mean whatever political stance makes you piss your pants in fear.

Blessed be.

Only in the vague sense that societies other than Western ones have a way more fluid/varied perspective of gender
Yes. A friend recently explained it to me. It’s how some tribes have understood and accepted the trans people in their communities.

@revenant

I like this video presentation by this man. He makes sense in his discussion that captured my interest. As a quarter Native American myself I listen more and more to their fascinating stories and pay increasing attention to both useful wisdom and the beauty of nature.
Does it involve Elizabeth warren?

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout

Yes, one spirit speaketh from her left forked tongue while the other speaketh from her right forked tongue.

More dysphoria?
I've been aware of that for years. I think it's hilarious that the right is claiming transgenderism is something new. It's just a new name on the same old thing.
Peaceandnamaste · 26-30, F
@LordShadowfire true. Gender fluid identities are ancient and not new.
There are practically many transgender people who exist. Also not talking about men who dress like a woman.
ReneeT · 61-69, M
I have not heard of it, but I can truly identify with it. I have always felt "two spirits" within me.
Majorsite · 61-69, M
No, But now aren't there about 65 different genders ?
SilkandLace2 · 46-50, M
I've read about it before, yes
Peaceandnamaste · 26-30, F
@MrBrownstone Is she a conservative?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Peaceandnamaste I don’t know.

There are so many Native American tribes -- this is like Woke F-Troop.
i know that its a term non-indigenous americans use broadly and badly.

And that depending upon the tribe it can have varied meanings/definitions.

And that its one of their 5 (?) gender/personality/spirit types .

im not totally clear on it myself as it changes from region to region, and that its not a literal interpretation of their native language word for it.
