I Hate Seeing Shootings Happen At Schools

Donald Trump broke off from an event at the White House and called it “ a very sad day”. He condemned “an absolutely horrific attack” and said his administration was “determined to do everything in our power” to prevent such incidents.

My question: Do you suppose he has no power? What’s he done since the Florida school shootings?

This is all freakin bullshit.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
that's a lot of stuff to say for a bastard who took NRA "donations" to do nothing about gun violence
Fernie · F
@lorne13 around 55 million was donated by the NRA
lorne13 · 61-69, M
@Fernie trumps campaign got over 30 million
Fernie · F
@lorne13😡
Ynotisay · M
That's the hard part. Listening to people say that things will change and then nothing changes. He was sure singing a different tune when he spoke two weeks ago at an NRA event.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Ynotisay The NRA has all the politicians where they want them. Trump has to drain the NRA swamp.

For some reason, and I honestly don’t know why, America is ok with the school killings.
Let’s do some quick maths to highlight this...
1 school shooting every 10 years = very little action, if any.
10 school shootings in 10 years (1 a year) = very little action, if any.
10 school shootings per year = very little action, if any.

Now, at some point in the future, possibly not too far, America will reach a number/statistic where it actually matters enough to take some action.

But what is that number? 1 every day? 10 a day? There is obviously a number after which some action would be taken right? Let’s go crazy and say there were 20 school shootings happening every day across America (silly I know, but let’s just say that’s what was happening). You’d assume that something would be done about that right? Yes. So it stands to reason then that there is a number America would not be ok with. And therefore that also means that all the while nothing is being done about school shootings, America is just basically ok with them, until they reach a more critical level.

So I feel sorry for Americans who don’t like gun violence or school shootings, but the maths clearly show that you’ll need to have way more before anything will actually ever get done to stop them.

In the U.K. we had a number, after which everyone agreed enough was enough. That number was 1. Just 1 incident. Not 1 a year. Not 1 a decade. Just the 1, after which legal action was taken to remove firearms and no further incidents have occurred.

@sleepyhead Lucky for the kids going to school. One less thing to worry about.

Unfortunately, school shootings are yesterday’s news.

One time the black panthers entered the Californian Congress chamber with their guns. Then they announced they had the wrong room and left as the senators shit their pants. The next day california passed gun legislation. They wont do shit till it hits them at home
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@SW-User Right now, what’s important to them is the right to own guns. That’s it.
SW-User
@SimplyTracie what is important to them is the money the nra gives them for reelection. They care about the things that fill their pockets, they are not moral men.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@SW-User Don’t you hate how politics work?

Well, lucky for us, Trump is gonna drain the swamp. No more Pay for Play. No more favors or votes can be bought.

Currently, federal law requires background checks (through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System) only for guns sold through licensed firearm dealers, which account for 78% of all gun sales in the United States. This data is according to a study by the original author that found that 40% of gun owners were transferred (this includes both sale and inheritance) without a background check in 1994, but once it was updated in February 2017, he found that of 1613 adult gun owners, only 22% purchased a firearm through a private sale.[6] The current federal law allows people not "engaged in the business" of selling firearms to sell firearms without a license or records. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) states that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System has prevented over two million felons and other prohibited persons from purchasing firearms. According to the CSGV, the law also has a prohibitive effect, that deters illegal purchases.
Even if Trump tried and cared, which I doubt he does, because fear is so much a part of his political lifeline he couldn't stop this, anymore than a decent human being in the White be House could.

But, in an ironic way, he's made a good point. Guns, vel non, are not really the problem. We need to deal with why people feel the need for guns, why they fear, hate and distrust their neighbors and how this impacts them as parents and their children.

The gun problem really is a microcosm. This could have been a bomb or poison gas, and the the 2nd Amendment does kind of makes guns harder more prevalent, but it's the sociological problems that breed Timothy McVeighs, David Duke's, Osama Bin Ladins, and Donald Trumps that we need to to figure out for a solution.

Until then, we need to lock up our kids as best we can, deal with shooting the bad guys, and just wait until we can slow down the rate we breed them.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@MistyCee I agree. Can't really eliminate guns completely but keeping the school children safe from being shot should be something that can be accomplished (I think). We have brilliant minds in this country and I'm sure someone can find a way.

antisocialbutterfly · 22-25, F
I’m currently studying to be a teacher which means from the age of 5- retirement I will have been in some sort of school. Breaks my heart that nobody can agree on at least one idea to protect these kids. Who knows, maybe the kid God intended to cure cancer someday might just die in a school shooting before he or she can even attend medical school? Haha we all knew if it were shootings in government buildings in Washington DC something would be done real fast. Unfortunately nobody is in too much of a hurry to protect these kids . Sad , because children are our future .
antisocialbutterfly · 22-25, F
Was that sarcasm?
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@antisocialbutterfly Of course not. I'm so angry. You wouldn't believe how angry.
antisocialbutterfly · 22-25, F
Sorry, you can never tell these days lol.
river52 · 70-79, M
In November 1998, President Bill Clinton directed the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and the U.S. Attorney General (A.G.) to provide recommendations concerning the fact that 25 percent or more of sellers at gun shows are not required to run background checks on potential buyers. This was called the gun show loophole.[7]:3,12[8][9]:27 Two months later, Gun Shows: Brady Checks and Crime Gun Traces was released.[7] The Secretary and the A.G. made seven recommendations, including expanding the definition of "gun show," and reviewing the definition of "engaged in the business."

After the Columbine High School massacre in April 1999, gun shows and background checks became a focus of national debate.[10][11][12] In May, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association (NRA) told the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, "We think it is reasonable to provide mandatory, instant criminal background checks for every sale at every gun show."[13]:118 Those concerned about the shows believed they were a source of illegally trafficked firearms.[14][nb 1] Efforts to reverse a key feature of the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA) by requiring criminal background checks and purchase records on private sales at gun shows, which had become prolific in the U.S. since the law's passage in 1986, were unsuccessful.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@river52 In layman's terms please.
river52 · 70-79, M
He can only direct and recommend......that is how our democracy is run......
river52 · 70-79, M
@SimplyTracie didn't say we can't do anything......there is more to be done, enforcement and background checks too.
chrisCA · M
@river52 Maybe not the NRA, but what does it say about the mindset of a country that has such an organization?
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@river52 Absolutely. Enforcement and universal background checks. While they’re looking into that, can we focus on kids safety?

I’d be interested in knowing what school administrators have done to increase security at their schools. I hope they don’t have the “it won’t happen to us” mentally. That would be foolish.
carsonfry · 22-25, M
Why is everything wrong with the World Donald Trump's fault?
Ynotisay · M
@SimplyTracie Well, there's nothing like a Chinese leader giving the OK for a state run corporation to build Trump hotels and condos in Indonesia to change the rules. And let's not forget the, 'Too many lost jobs in China" tweet. Yeah...America first. That's it.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Ynotisay It’s almost a fiction novel. The greatest authors couldn’t make this stuff up.

- President puts sanctions on this Chinese company after it does business with Iran and North Korea.
- Chinese invest in a Trump Golf Course.
- President lifts sanctions.

Just exactly what do you think he can do Tracie? Not one new law would have prevented this episode. Perhaps you want us to be Cuba or another communist country where they take away all our rights. That's what liberals want.
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@TheProphet Having gun licensing and strict control of the types of weapons people can own has not destroyed people's general rights to life in Australia or Britain. Neither country is communist
TexChik · F
@Dlrannie cool , but it’s really none of your business , eh Brit ?

@TexChik Cool, but where senseless deaths are concerned everyone is entitled to an opinion, eh Yank ?

@room101 I think you hit the nail on the head. I agree that this is a fundamental issue in our country. There is a middle American mentality that is reluctant to change and a belief that American "exceptionalism" means that we have nothing to gain or learn from others. It's very cult-like thinking.
coary987 · M
Why can't he put a police officer at every school
carsonfry · 22-25, M
Most good guys with guns do the right thing. The one in Parkland was not strong enough to do the right thing.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@carsonfry I have no issues with good guys doing the right thing. Keeping the school children safe is what is on my mind at the moment.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@room101 I don't know either but I said he was a brave person because it appears that he didn't just wait outside doing nothing.
river52 · 70-79, M
if the latest shooter is under 18, his parents can be held responsible under the gun safety laws...
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@river52 That is an important step. Enforcement of current laws. Holding people accountable.
river52 · 70-79, M
@SimplyTracie exactly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@river52 The shooter was 17 years old.

Is it? Libtards don’t want progress made here, they want the issue to they can whine about it . You are just so concerned about those kids... right??

I’m pretty sure god wants action being taken to change policies and law....not half assed “thoughts and prayers”

@Insomniac100 This is so irritating to me. Those words are a slap in the face for those Florida students who marched in Washington DC. All for NOT.
