Oh no who will show up six hours after a crime has been committed and shoot my dog

The police are there to file reports for the prosecution. Anything else is optional.

Only if we have the right to not pay the portion of taxes that pay their salary.

They are paid to be professionals. Whether they do all the time is another story.

@NativePortlander1970 that is pretty crazy!
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@NativePortlander1970 they should change it so that it is a constitutional duty to protect citizens. I mean isn't cops motto "to PROTECT and serve"?
@Sweetguy024 They should, yes, but because the US Constitution does not specifically include authorizing policing communities, SCOTUS determined it's not a federal requirement to define their duties, or something like that, it's really convoluted.

No. They're public servants. If they want a choice, they can quit.
@IllThinkOfSomething Nope, not no more, look at my reply to @JimboSaturn , the screenshot I supplied, SCOTUS essentially removed that status of public servants from law enforcement, they now serve at the whim of corporations.
IllThinkOfSomething · 26-30, M
@NativePortlander1970 the court's judgment is wrong.
@IllThinkOfSomething Like I told Saturn, take it up with Roberts.

Maybe someone else left the pamphlet in their house. Maybe they are mentally ill and don't have the capacity to understand the issue. Maybe some protester handed it to them in the street. Maybe they are writing an article on the issue and the leaflet is research.
There's so many potential reasons for them to have such material, it's ludicrous that the police might be given the right to withold help. It's a typical kneejerk, reactionary response to a very complex issue.

Cops have no legal obligation to help anyone
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
It's kinda dumb and just a hypothetical situation. But it's kinda like if God doesn't save people who don't acknowledge he exists or go against what the Bible says. Then why should police help those who don't support them or even hate them?

Are the police going to allow them the freedom to deal with the issue on their own?
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
To rephrase your question, you're asking if the police should have the right to refuse service if somebody's politics piss them off.
Does that clarify things?
Does that clarify things?
Sweetguy024 · 36-40, M
@LordShadowfire yea, that's a better way to put it i suppose
Dave1955 · 61-69, M
@LordShadowfire Money corrupts absolutely
I think in either 2004 or 2005, the US Supreme Court ruled that since the police are actually more investigative, they don't have any real legal responsibility to help.
