Got a call from the cops, the pay at pump yesterday that totally looked like it went through, in fact did not.

@dirge oh not that dumb to give my card on the phone, going in to the gas station later to talk to the manager. The cop was legit.
The station's pay at pump is just stupid, you have to swipe the card before pumping, but because the attendant approved the gas on, it was in 'pay inside' mode apparently.
I'm not sure why it looked like it went through though, but the screen totally changed back from 'you owe x' to 'begin pumping bla bla bla' like it started over.
It's just an inconvenient trip back into town this afternoon before I head back home.

That was really not your fault. You could only assume that the card reader functioned properly. Given that mistake, I would keep an eye on your statement to see if the charge went through and tell your CC company you believe your account may be in jeopardy because you believe an illegal RFID reader may have been used to hack your account. They will issue you a new card and flag your account for your review.

I do not leave the counter till the sales staff says its approved or I see a message to that effect on the terminal and confirm it with the staff. As a retail person myself I've had to call back quite a few customers who are in a rush. It's just a few seconds, take the time.

The pumps don’t start until the payment is approved.
If they asked for your card number, and if you gave it to them .
Call customer service and put a hold on your card or cancel it and ask for a list of recent charges

@Onestarlitnight the attendant had approved to pay inside, the pump didn't indicate that was a necessity, it looked like I could still pay at the pump after pumping.

Nah. I did try to buy a frappacino once and I made it out the shop but this lady came running out "EXCUSE ME, YOUR CARD DECLINED".

Never happen. Always get a receipt (for taxes).
