All comedy is subjective.
What offends one will delight another.
And i suspect it's always been so.
It's only in recent times that a certain demographic feel the need to voice their opinion on just about everything.
And i suspect they only do that because they're powerless in changing anything for the positive in their own world.

Unlimited. Comedy is free speech.

Morality and decorum should not be abandoned

There is humor in everything. There has to be.

Limits. Humans should have limits or we are an uncivilized barbarian society.

Depends on how it's pushed. If there's only one type of comedy pushed, is that really right?
Is it right to use comedy to insult directly instead of indirectly?
If you're religious is it comedy to make fun of the religion within a church, place of worship or sacred place?
Is it comedy to make fun of the dead?
Is it comedy to cause panic in a crowded area?
Nothing is absolute. And comedy is no exception.

No limits. One doesn't HAVE to laugh in response if one finds something sensitive or unfunny. But we seem to live in a society these days where outrage is the norm and ANYTHING that might offend ANYONE can lead to repercussions.
Like trying to watch the news and seeing how often it isn't actually covered in depth because someone might find something upsetting or triggering. Life is triggering, start dealing with it not hiding from it.

Everything has limits, but I think anything can be joked about if done well.
Comedy should push boundaries but not at the cost of punching down on people who are already hurting.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@mindstruggle This is the answer, folks. We can all go home.
SnickersDOM · M
@mindstruggle even this seemingly reasonable rubric is subjective, for me it would depend on whether the object of the punching down was evil or good
IDGAF if anyone punches down on Trump if he's ever hurting

@SnickersDOM Agreed. I’m less concerned when cruelty is directed towards the cruel.

In our country some people have the strange idea that comedy somehow gives you a free pass from anti-discrimination laws (in the same way that some people think that anything goes on social media). "Humour" is traditionally used in the workplace to marginalise women in particular and mask behaviours and opinions that people would not openly admit to in a non-jokey situation.
My own tastes are very limited. I can't be bothered with any comedy that relies upon tired stereotypes or is in the service of entrenched political interests. When laughing at those in power, however, there are (almost) no limits.

Should always be limits if there is a mix of people some can go to far and its not funny
rinkydinkydoink · M
Who is in charge of the allowing? It doesn't look like Trump can take humorous criticism. At all.
Remember when Obama made a laughing stock out of him at that press dinner years ago? LOL

@rinkydinkydoink Trump is exactly the type of hypocrite this question shines a light on.

No limits. If it's not for you, avoid it.

Anything can be the subject of a joke.
My motto is: punching up to people and institutions in power is always allowed. Kicking down to people who are already powerless should be avoided. Also: mock choices, not circumstances.
bijouxbroussard · F
@NerdyPotato That makes sense; I agree.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
Who cares? If you’re thin skinned, turn the channel or don’t go. You can preview a comic on YouTube; so, there really aren’t any excuses for your complaints about the content.
GoFish ·
just cause it's a joke doesn't mean it can't also be in bad tase or horrible or insulting.. or gross af. people's choice of words says a lot about them joking or otherwise some things just aren't funny in the end
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
That's the thing, a lot of propaganda is disguised as comedy like when the far right tries to be funny but it's really low key white nationalist propaganda in disguise.
I don't really know the answer to this though.

I’m not a fan of "hate humor". The "free speech" conservatives aren’t either— when the target is one of their heroes, like Trump, Charlie Kirk, Rush Limbaugh et al…
