Is there anything we can do to stop people using the name Karen in a derogatory way?

My mum's name is Karen and I don't like to see her name treated like this. What started it anyway? Who is the mysterious Karen it was named after?
SW-User
I'm pretty sick of it too. I know a few Karens that are wonderful. And a Felicia. It's unfortunate we chose people's names to use in a derogatory way. I will stop using these terms myself.

It's so annoying and rude. And I've never used it in that way.

The only way it will stop is if adults actually grew up and people stopped following fads.

My aunt is named Karen literally spelled the same and she is the most entitled person i know, literally any phone call or time with her is monopolized by her speaking about herself and things in her life, so the Karen stereotype is fitting for her, while im sorry for all the good karens out there having their names dragged through the dirt think about the Felicias of the world!

@WolfGirlwh0r3 This just proves you're being as unintelligent as the rest. (Were you trying to say 'gauche'? - Crude; lacking social intelligence )
WolfGirlwh0r3 · 36-40, T
@Really And why am i unintelligent because i call out entitled people? And sure thats what i was trying to say, thanks for spelling it right for me!

@WolfGirlwh0r3 You're welcome

Nope no ways to reverse the trend. Thing is your mom might be one of the last Karen's. Next generation will be unlikely to name their kids that because of the connotations of an overly quarrelsome person. Gen Z will be those parents you know.

If it was me, I'd have a sense of humor about it as the term would not be personally attacking me...

It bugs me too. I knew a few Karens and always liked the name. People are stupid
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Not certain exactly how it was started, yet I do know that it was before this site was started in 2016. The term exploded on twitter because of hashtags. Then spread from there like wildfire.

I remember this because my neighbor then was called Karen.
@DeWayfarer Bullshit, as I said reddit existed BEFORE twitter, and was using Karen way before they came into existence.

@NativePortlander1970 show me a video link on this site from Reddit!

Not a gif image link.

You can't. Because reddit, like this site, can't save videos! Same with hashtagging and retweets.

This is a Twitter video link:

I don't even have a Twitter account!

The poster of this question is my daughter and I too want to see an end to my name being used in a derogatory way.
why is ur mum like that tho?
CestManan · 46-50, F
Supposedly it came from the original movie of mean girls. One of the characters was named karen, anyway that's one theory about the origin.

if I have my choice, they would use the name Danielle because a lot of Danielle's are difficult to deal with
SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
The only way is for people to stop acting like Karens
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
No, it's literally too late. You should have spoken up sooner. Would your mother be willing to change her name? It came from a movie mention of an annoying character named... Karen.

To be honest, I never heard the name used that way until I saw it here on SW.

I don't use it, nor do the people I know offline.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
It's just a term for angry or entitled women
AllycatAD · 26-30, F
Change it to Alyson, I don't care.
tenta · 18-21, M
Chil out it's just a joke

You can't reverse a popular trend. Not many people named Adolf either for obvious reasons. When a person is named a certain name and they have a bad reputation then the name gets demonized. Before Karen it was Felicity. After Karen it will be something else. It's just a trend about what makes a name popular or unpopular.
Really · 80-89, M
@Renaci The trend is called popular stupidity.
craig7 · 70-79, M
@Renaci As for the name "Adolf" - when I was growing up,our family doctor here in Australia had that first name.He was of middle European background, and also Jewish.I remember being a bit curious about his name back when I was a youngster.

has your mom considered the witness protection program?
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
My Mom’s name is Karen and it doesn’t bother me 🤷🏼‍♀️. Unfortunately you won’t change people’s minds about this.
swirlie · 31-35, F
Tell your friends to stop electing Donald Trump and I'll stop calling your mom Karen.
Blame reddit, they'll be the ones to convince.
