@GuyWithOpinions to have standards i guess but it's obnoxious and in some cases unreasonably expensive .. there should be regulations regarding them imo it's insane what some of them get by with charging while neglecting the place
they have good and bad points, it depends entirely on how one is run / what the actual covenants are
seeing a development with an HOA right next to one without an HOA, you can see why an HOA is somewhat desirable, if it is constrained enough ... if you have to live on a suburban detached house lot of less than an acre, the choice comes down to whether, since you don't have the buffer of acreage, you want a neighbor with a rusting wheeless 1985 IROC-Z up on blocks in 3 foot tall grass for 10 years in the front yard next to the sidewak and 8 renters' cars overflowing the driveway onto the street kerb every day (ahhh, libertarian freedom!), or you want something else, ideally with covenants restricted enough that the HOA board doesn't think it is the purpose of an HOA to create and fund social activities for home owners, or funding anything beyond landscape maintenance of limited common grounds for that matter
but in an ideal world we'd all live on 25 acres and be able teleport directly into buzzing Manhattan in the blink of an eye and then back to our rural idyll when we're done, and Earth would only have ONE billion people to make such land distribution more feasible without leading to the shithole environment / climate we have today (more people means EVERYONE'S quality of life degrades proportionally, at least at humanity's current level of tech / energy production, storage, distribution / transport modes)
then HOA's wouldn't be needed, only the EPA would be needed
@DancingStarGoddess And the funny thing is, at least in San Francisco, that image is what the nimbys actually look like. Always old, with that sort of clothing and demeanor.
All for them if they are run right. Ours is, and it prevents neighbors from ruining the neighborhood that dont want to keep their place looking decent. No renting is a plus as well.
A home owner's association is no different than having a Board of Directors who live in a condo building.
The whole concept of a HOA is strictly a personal one, which means you either embrace the concept or you reject it and live somewhere else.
What an HOA does however, is attract 'like minds', which means the typical person who likes HOAs are the very people who buy residential units in places that have HOAs.
Very rarely do non-believers end up in residential communities that have HOAs and if they do, they generally turn out to be the proverbial "neighbors from hell", simply because they pay a monthly management fee which they hate doing, but then feel entitled to function outside the rules that govern a condo corporation which is what a residential community is that has an HOA.
@sstronaut I guess it depends on how much power the HOA has. Some cannot do jack but some have actual authority. I imagine people could be fined over their nuisance animals. During the day, fine. At some god awful hour of the night, that is a nuisance.
Like I said, I would not want to live in an HOA but I understand why some people would.
They should be banned and they should be used in schools as an example of how totalitarianism can creep into society. They should also be studied for the same reason.
@Munumbis A Home Owner's Association is a private, legally incorporated body set up to manage common areas of a housing development. So in fact the last thing you would ever expect to see in a totalitarian society.
Run correctly, they can serve a purpose in maintaing property standards, and resident codes of conduct. It gets intrusive and limiting if mismanaged; or you're a resident accustomed to a freedom to modify your property at will.
@LordShadowfire I can imagine it is like going to a job in the sense that at first, things are fine but then those in charge just look for ANYthing to nit pick. One's property will never be good enough no matter what they do.
Usually when I hear about them they come off as a bunch of petty dictators dedicated to enforcing THEIR concept of what a person's home and life should be.
