Did a rat do this?? !!

A few weeks ago I saw a huge rat ion my kitchen counter. My neighbor patched up the hole behind my washing machine that I saw it run behind.
I thought the problem was solved but now I am wondering.
I opened my dresser drawer in my bedroom a few minutes ago and found this. It was a tube of glucose tablets. The ONLY place I keep them is in my purse or on my nightstand. It was NOT there yesterday! It’s empty and chewed up! Could this be a rat?
I have heard noises awhile back in my bathroom that’s in my bedroom, and one time months ago I was almost asleep and one of my dresser drawers slid open by itself! I assumed it was a poltergeist and went back to sleep.
Now I’m thinking that rat is stuck in my house somehow since my neighbor patched the holes in my kitchen wall.
My roommate has a cat and she keeps trying to go in my bedroom and I just shoo her out.
That’s it- my next day off I’m going to the animal shelter and getting a cat to keep in my bedroom!

Rats have teeth that are made for getting into or through anything. Let your roommate's cat hang out in your room. Some cats are lousy mousers, some are fantastic. If you get one of your own, choose carefully and keep in mind you will have to go through a greeting process between the two cats in order to keep the peace and not end up with an injured cat.
Not trying to stifle your enthusiasm, I love cats and think everybody should have one, but be aware of the circumstances.😸

@UnderLockDown yeah, if I do get one, it’s staying in my bedroom, not around the other cat
... wait, the poltergeist?!🧐 👻
Mardrae · F
@UnderLockDown yeah, I have seen and heard some crazy stuff in my house

A cat may not help and may be injured or get used to the rat. They are highly intelligent. Try a couple of spring-loaded rat traps with a 'little' peanut butter, placed against a wall. Research articles to help you!
Mardrae · F
@Oster1 I’m very clumsy about stuff like that and would end up having the trap snap me. Many years ago I had a rat problem and called pest control and they put traps out and I actually saw one of the rats pick up a stick and snap ( is that the right word?) the trap and then eat the peanut butter inside! They are too intelligent for traps. I hate to get poison too because if that kills them, then the feral cats outside would eat it and it would kill them too.

@Mardrae Yes, that's what they do, and why just put a little.

Yeah, in that case do not mess with a trap. They can break your fingers. Get someone to help you. Where there is one, there are others!

@Oster1 omg 😳

Have you ever had or been by pet rodents? Those are clearly rodent teeth marks. Hopefully you can get your situation sorted out
Mardrae · F
@deadgerbil a few weeks ago I saw a huge rat sitting on my kitchen counter. He ran behind my washing machine and my neighbor patched up the holes he found where it was obviously getting in. Maybe it got stuck inside and found it’s way into my bedroom.

@Mardrae I was getting at how these are easily identifiable as rodent teeth marks, so this shouldn't really be an open question over what did this.

You can make your own trap. Get a pretty large bucket(tall enough that it can not jump out of), a piece of wood as a ramp and attach it to the edge, and bait to lure the rat up the ramp and into the bucket

Nah, nah, go ahead and let that cat in.

mice/rats can chew their way through just about anything; I've seen them eat through steel braided rubber hoses and radiators before

@wildbill83 omg 😳 😱

If there's a male and female in there you've got problems.
Female rats have litters of about 6 at a time every few weeks so if there's evidence they're already there you can set all the traps you want it won't solve the issue.
And if you have drywall or skirting boards even holes for dryer hoses they have complete access to your home
Mardrae · F
@Picklebobble2 I just got the dryer hose covered and holes that were behind my washing machine patched. Not sure where else they could be getting it. Haven’t heard or seen any besides the huge one on my kitchen counter a few weeks ago. I bought some of those throw packets of rat poison and put them in my dresser drawers. They were so expensive and only a few in there so hopefully it will work. I also put one outside my bedroom window in my flower bed.

That looks like what a mouse or rat could do. One thing I know is they hate steel wool, Aldo a cat is a great idea.
Banksy83 · 41-45, M
That might have been there weeks ,are there any droppings as thats their calling card.
Rats are a nuisance. My mum had rats in her house - they kept eatinng the drain hose on the washing machine (as well as stealing potatoes and anything else). I ended up encasing the washing machine hose in steep mesh - that stopped the little buggers! 🤣
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
From my experience it definitely sounds like a mouse
Yes, a rat can do that. Any rodent can. Get a cat or set traps. Use strong wire on the dryer vent. When I moved into my house in Texas, that is how the rat got in.
Catzgano · 31-35, F
Invest in some rat traps
Mardrae · F
@Catzgano yeah. I don’t see how it can even survive- there’s at least 10 or more feral cats that live in my yard!
Catzgano · 31-35, F
@Mardrae it got past the guards lol
Yes, that’s the work of a rat
@Banksy83
It’s a pretty good size to be strong enough to chew through the plastic, probably six inches or more
Mardrae · F
@Onestarlitnight omg…. I have only heard a noise maybe twice, and that was months ago. No telling how long it’s been in my bedroom or how big it is.
Banksy83 · 41-45, M
@Mardrae my Aunt had themand Poison was spread about I found two dead they were the same size as otters
carpediem · 61-69, M
You need a professional exterminator immediately.
Mardrae · F
@carpediem I just need to get the holes and rotted wood in my Sheetrock patched up. An exterminator isn’t going to do anything but put poison or traps out and charge me an arm and a leg. I can do that myself.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@Mardrae Good luck. Once they settle in, patching holes won't be enough. I hope your plan works.
Definitely chewed up by a rat
Mardrae · F
@BizSuitStacy @BizSuitStacy @BizSuitStacy @BizSuitStacy @BizSuitStacy that glucose bottle was pretty thick. That thing must have had huge teeth!
@Mardrae That plastic bottle is child's play for a good sized rat.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Yeah, they'll go for sweet things like that.
Mardrae · F
@LordShadowfire ong- the thought of a rat running around in my bedroom when I’m sleeping!!!!
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@LordShadowfire i've heard they'll eat anything
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
"I assumed it was a poltergeist and went back to sleep".... and you're surprised that it's a rat
