Why does anyone play the lottery?

I once put two dollars into the multi-state game, and didn't win. It's a classic example of operant conditioning. Without that multimillion dollar payoff, I lost interest in playing again. I think, if I had one a couple hundred million on the first ticket, I would have been hooked as a lifelong customer.

If you play the lottery, how much did you win on your first ticket?

There is a home version of the lottery you can play too.
Basically you take the money out of your wallet that you would normally spend on tickets then just throw that money in the trash.
The odds of winning big are the same.

@Mikeawesome1986 That is exactly right. Even if that money is only enough to buy dinner for two, it is STILL more than the stupid lottery pays out to the vast majority of people who play it.

@CestManan not sure what your prices are, but here it's £2 for a line. It's twice a week too, so if you put on 2 lines, twice a week that's £8 a week. 1 month of that, that's £32, which you can get a bit for that.

@Mikeawesome1986 About the same numbers except for in dollars.
Right now one dollar is worth about .73 GPB

No one really plays the lottery expecting to win. What you buy with a lottery ticket is permission to dream, because there is a path open to achieving that wealth. Until the draw. Then you buy another ticket to keep dreaming..😷

@CestManan Yes. And a quick break down of the stats goes like this. Any lottery payout will equal the total of all revenue raised, minus the organisers cut, plus taxes. So on pure chance, you are likely to get back maybe 70% of what you spend on tickets. So lets accept for a minute that you arent going to win the lottery and instead put your ticket money into a jar on your desk every week for a couple of years. Then count it. NOW you will feel like a winner..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman I read this somewhere. In the US when someone wins a big jackpot, by the time the govt is done taking all their taxes, the winner gets only like 29% of the original winnings. Like they take 60% off the top then the pay outs are taxed again.

I do not play it anyways so not like it concerns me.

The 70% figure is likely lower here in the USA. It doesn't sound bad but it also gives people false hope.

Another problem at least here is they make gambling so tempting to those who are hooked but then there is a stigma attached.

That, like other stigmatized lifestyles, seem to follow that suit. Kind of like how they bombard people with prescription drug ads or what not then when people get hooked, the addict is suddenly to blame.

@CestMananHere the govt takes cut from the lottery Company pre distribution. So winnings are tax free. But Yes. I had heard of federal and State tax gouging there. Even more reason to keep your money in your pocket.😷

Lotteries are a tax on people who don't understand statistics.

They're buying a dream.

They're voluntarily paying taxes.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Crazywaterspring The same can be said of smokers and drinkers. Its called discretionary taxation.😷
It’s a tax for people that don’t have an education.

Before playing the lottery, first divide the odds by the entire population of the country you live in, then ask yourself if one person in however-many folds worth of your countries population had the winning ticket, what's the chance of you guessing their correct phone number at random?
Mikeawesome1986 · 36-40, M
I won £30 on my first ticket. Then I didn't win for about a year, and since then its only been the odd tenner or free lucky dip. I gave thought about stopping, but I don't notice the couple of quid missing each lottery day, and one day my numbers may turn up.
TheCoolestCat · 31-35, M
i won 50,000 euros once on a scratchcard lol, true story i was only 25 at the time, had a couple of £500 wins since then and one £1000 win quite recently

most video gambling has a rate of 4.25 to one.
a worse rate? and the player loses interest
but if he hits around on in 5 pulls? they will keep playing.
I win on scratchers occasionally. My hub buys a lotto ticket every week though. He figures it's not expensive and someone has to win.
Bri89 · 31-35, M
The same reason why people gamble. Even if it is an astronomical chance, people are hooked on that chance of hitting it big.

Last time I bought one was when I turned 18. I won $24 and bought a carton of cigarettes. Mostly because I legally could.
HannibalMontanimal · 26-30, M
I play sometimes. Haven't really won any big money though
MoonaNorth86 · 36-40, F
One billion dollars 😂

@Crazywaterspring Funny you should mention that. Day trading options is precisely that.😷
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman I'm guilty of that.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Crazywaterspring OK. Then if you trade (buy or sell) an option, and you make money on the deal, the other party loses on that same deal. That is the classic definition of a bet, is it not. 😷
