Why does anyone play the lottery?

I once put two dollars into the multi-state game, and didn't win. It's a classic example of operant conditioning. Without that multimillion dollar payoff, I lost interest in playing again. I think, if I had one a couple hundred million on the first ticket, I would have been hooked as a lifelong customer.

If you play the lottery, how much did you win on your first ticket?

I won £30 on my first ticket. Then I didn't win for about a year, and since then its only been the odd tenner or free lucky dip. I gave thought about stopping, but I don't notice the couple of quid missing each lottery day, and one day my numbers may turn up.
