Why does anyone play the lottery?

I once put two dollars into the multi-state game, and didn't win. It's a classic example of operant conditioning. Without that multimillion dollar payoff, I lost interest in playing again. I think, if I had one a couple hundred million on the first ticket, I would have been hooked as a lifelong customer.

Before playing the lottery, first divide the odds by the entire population of the country you live in, then ask yourself if one person in however-many folds worth of your countries population had the winning ticket, what's the chance of you guessing their correct phone number at random?
