Is learning to drive manual hard?

I've seen a few videos of it. It doesnt look too bad. I want to learn but I'm not sure how long it will take.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
It's really not. What makes it hard is that whoever is teaching you is guaranteed to be freaking out about their car the entire time, and the pressure makes it tough to actually follow instructions and build up the muscle memory.

But having been the person doing the teaching so many times... fuck if it isn't heartbreaking 😂

So I guess the trick is to do it in a third party's car - or yours if you already have one.

@QuixoticSoul Yep im scared to break the clutch or something
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Sambriggs96 You'll start to smell it before doing much real damage. Then let it sit and cool down for a while.

But it's fine, really. Automotive clutches are no big deal, they're usually pretty easy to get the feel for.

No its not sweetie you will be all good in no time Ok fine don't even get on main road unless you have tried 25 times already it's hard af..hardest part is that it's manual duh

an hour to learn how, a week to be proficient. modern cars have synchromesh gears so all you need to do is release gas depress the clutch switch gears and release the clutch slowly as you re-apply gas.as a beginner may want to use handbrake if starting on a hill to avoid stalling. learning to match rpms to gears for speed shifting can be learned as well but absolutely not necessary.tons of youtube vids but some are full of shit stick to the basic beginner ones you should be fine
The dance of feet & clutch us something you have to get the "hang" of...

It gives you much more direct control over the engine, rather than the automatic transmission.

In talking with various drivers of standard shift vehicles, it seems to be a general consensus that such transmissions often have been either "tricky" to get into 1st gear/get going from a dead stop, or "tricky" to change into other gears...where "tricky" is what a novice experiences.

(A study done years ago split a driver's ed course into 2 groups & taught one group entirely on automatic transmissions, the other, on manual transmissions.

After completing the course, students were given a short training on the driving a vehicle with the "other" transmission, and asked to do this, and successfully navigate a traffic cone course laid out in a big parking lot.

The result was that it was easier for people trained on *manual* transmissions to learn how to successfully use an automatic transmission than to go the other way.)

Get a cheap car or a rental. Go to an empty car park. Practise starting from a standstill hundreds of times using just the clutch. No accelerator, just clutch. Eventually you won't stall it and it won't jump. Then worry about gear changes, that bit will come naturally once you've nailed the clutch

Not hard to learn the basics on the first day. Then practice on roads that are not busy so you can get used to how the car behaves when you operate it, especially on hills. It mostly is a matter of building up confidence in your skills and letting it become second nature.

Yes, it's hard and it's inevitable that you will crash and explode into a fireball 😮💥

Really though, once you get used to the clutch and feeling the bite point it's actually more fun. It's real driving. Driving an auto is just driving a bumper car or a go kart. Driving a manual puts you in control 😎🚬

It wasn't hard for me at all. Took only a couple of weeks, but I was in the Army, got a crash course and learned on a two and a half ton truck (deuce and a half) in a small German town. lol No pressure!. :D Honestly though, I learned I loved it better than automatics.
Same I bought a 300 dollar VW off some guy ETSing, sink or swim was how I learned @MrPerditus1
Steve42 · 56-60, M
It's the same as automatic with an additional pedal to coordinate. Probably tough for people who lack that rapid eye hand coordination. Once you learn, you will never forget.
I couldn’t do it so done automatic lol
Yeah my friend done automatic too I think it’s so much easier tbh @SW-User
SW-User
@LittleTinks once you've learnt though it becomes unconscious. You never really think about it you just do it automatically
Yep true @SW-User
My first car had one and I didn't think it was too hard. It's probably a different experience for everyone, though.
BearDownChicago · 41-45, M
Not at all. You can learn it pretty quickly. Just don't get discouraged the few times you stall the car or grind the clutch
Yeah almost all cars in the EU are manual or they were I guess I don’t know if they still are.
Gumba1000 · M
Learning to move the car will be easy. Learning when to change gears will just take practice. You will manage :)
SW-User
Lol it was hard for me. I still can't.
Sambriggs96 · 26-30, F
@SW-User Whats the hardest part of it?
SW-User
@Sambriggs96 I guess the clutch. And figuring out when to shift.
Gumba1000 · M
@SW-User When learning its best to have silence in the car. Then listen to the engine, when it makes a noise sounding like its going to explode with revs, that's when to change gears. With more practice you learn to do it with the feel of the speed and resistance of the car.
Alfarrobas · 31-35, M
It's easy. It's nice.
I never drove one with automatic gears. So...

How we all learn in Europe
wackidywack · 22-25
it took me like a week
AngelKrish · 26-30, M
I am learning.... Need to write again again, reviewing periodically, solving questions to check my understanding in topics!
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
It takes some practice to learn how to coordinate using the clutch, when to shift and such, but it's not that hard.

Side note, you must be Aussie. I don't hear manual being said much on here, it's always "stick", so gday to a fellow Aussie
Bushmanoz · 56-60, M
@Sambriggs96 Always nice to meet another Aussie on the site! Mind if I stick my nose in and ask your personal motivation for driving a manual?
Sambriggs96 · 26-30, F
@Bushmanoz My friend has a manual car and I want to learn to drive it
Bushmanoz · 56-60, M
@Sambriggs96 good for you. I think the biggest problem starting out is people tend to just drop the clutch, ride it, once you have momentum don't feel you have to let it out all at once, like others have said, once you learn you'll never forget..although jumping back into an Auto has you looking for the clutch sometimes
Bushmanoz · 56-60, M
Easy, it just takes a bit of practise and someone who is patient, but kudos to you, it's very handy to know. You never know when having a manual license can get you or friends out of trouble
